Hi there!
I got the plans for a Typhoon MV-1, it would be my first "real" pattern plane, I'm moving to intermediate level. Does anyone have experience building/flying this plane? I have troubles finding plans for "current" 90 size planes. I know this isn't a new desing, but at least it is not older than myself! (25)
I plan on using a 91FX + Mac's Muffled Pipe + Perry Pump. Would that be "enough"? I like 4-strokes, but I want to keep it light and easy to maintain. By the way, the G.P. 60-size retracts are cheap, but are they good?
Any other comments/suggestions are welcome!!!

Sounds like a great setup to me. I have built each version of the Typhoon series over the years, and each one was a great plane.
The MV 1 (while not a latest and greatest design) would be very competitive in any AMA class today. The typhoons are just that sweet.
Advise. Build it out of contest balsa to keep the weight around 8 lbs.
You can build the nose up as well, save the money on the glass cowl, and then cover the fuse instead of the painting method most use for the Typhoons.
If you use a glass cowl, you can still cover the fuse, but have to paint the cowl, and always see its seams. Just build the cowling up , and cover it all. I have built all my typhoons with a built up cowl all the way to the Typhoon 2+2, and been very satisfied with the looks. The newest model the Typhoon 2000 ( Thats another story) To wide, tall to build from balsa to keep light, and then you have to build the cheeck cowls to keep the cool look.
I am glassing this one, and will paint the fuse on it.
The GP retacts are fine for an 8 lb plane, but why not modify for a nice set of fixed Bolly CFiber Gear and pants? Can do this for the same price as a retract setup, and never worry about gear again.

Hey guys,...
I caught this thread about Typhoons and was just curious as to which size MV-1 you were talking about?? If I recall correctly, originally there were three different MV-1 sizes the 909, the 1000, and the 1140. While I don't believe the 1140 ever caught on, or was revised into the 2+2; Gator still has plans for both the 909 and 1000.
If anyone has more information that could dispute or verify my theory, I'd appreciate hearing about it.
In any case,.. I'd be interested to know suitable engine requirements for either the Typhoon 909 or 1000.
Sincerely,
[email protected]

909- Built with contest balsa and covered was 8 lbs with a YS 91.
Faom wing stab and rudder sheeted.
Great airplane. Let someone talk me out of it after a season of flying. All the power it needed with a YS 91 and Cool Power 25%. Had 2 of these in the mid 90's
1000- Built contest balsa. Foam surfaces. Covered fuselage. 10 lbs with a YS 120 NC. Nice. Elevator servo decided to fail after about 20 flights. Bummer.
1140. Never built one. Saw a picture in the K Factor in the mid 90's of one. Was called the Typhoon "D" If my memory serves.
2+2 Built up fuse. Glass cowl. Foam surfaces. Glassed fuse and painted. Built for someone. He loved it. 10.5 lbs with YS 120 SC.
Have one for myself framed and ready to glass. Never got around to finishing it. I Will one day.
2000- The need breed. Widebody. Built up fuse. Glass cowl. Foam surfaces. Will be glassed and painted. OS 140 RX for power.
Fixed gear. Bolly Gear and pants. Huge wing 1200+ inches.
Have seen 3 fly. all looked great. Need to get it done soon. I need to quit building others planes, and work on my own awhile.
Yes , I have been accused of liking the Typhoon series over the years.

Gracias por los buenos deseos, Acroman330. Your spanish is "understandable", but needs "polishing".
The plane is the 909. Got the plans from a friend who is building the 2+2 and 2000. I don't want to get into 2 meter planes - yet.
I already bought the balsa (very light) and some ply and lite-ply. I think I'll go with a glass cowl, a friend has a mold for it. I will have to find a good canopy that fits the plane (any suggestions?)
I expect good performance with the .91FX, if I can hit 8lb! I think I'll use 4 Futaba S3001 (2 ail, 2 ele) and a S9001 on the rudder pull-pull.
As for the gear, I thought of a fixed configuration, but I'll go with the retracts just because of the "looks".
There aren't many pattern flyers here in Chile, we are 9 in "advanced" level and only 5 people in F3A! I hope next year we see more people...
Any other comments and suggestions are still welcome!
