I was noticing the very thin airfoils used on Chip's TOC Ultimate. What's the reason?

Ask keith and Rocco at AeroWorks. They are pretty good about getting e-mails answered. A bipe does generally have thinner airfoils compared to a monoplane, due to the increased drag inherent to a bipe. I haven't seen a good shot of the AW Ultimate from the side, but that may be all that's going on here. But, like I said I'd ask the guys at AeroWorks.

The Ultimate 10 dash 300s has a lot of wing area, and because of the size and light weight of the aerowork's Ultimate the wings are thinner to allow the plane to brake cleaner in maneuvers like snap rolls. I blew up a GB Ultimate to 1/3 scale, and I wish I had made the wings a little thinner. Even with the CG back it mush’s through snaps. Airfoils become more efficient the larger they become IE the larger and relatively lighter the plane the thinner the airfoil need’s to be in order to maintain similar performance (snaps/spins/3D ext.). Hope this helps.

Makes good sense. I'm starting a CGM Ultimate soon. The 'foils are not much thinner than the Aeroworks. It just looks strange in the photos.

The Aeroworks is using an 8% section per Chip. His original bipe had that thin a section and so the new one does as well. It uses functional flying wires to give the airplane the strength it needs.

lookin at the hangar 9 the airfoil is quite a bit fatter looking, interesting to see the difference in performance.
