RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Bob,
I think I used 20oz. since they are a little longer and ended up at the end of the bulkhead where it was really easy to keep them in place with the servo tray. I thought at first I would put a 24oz in for the smoke but I used the slimline smoke muffler with the preheater. It seems to be more efficient so I can turn the Skywriter way down to get the desired smoke and burn less oil. With that configuration I can put it into a hover and make it disappear yet still have plenty of "smoke on" minutes. Don't ask how many since I flip the switch on and off many times during a typical flight.
As for the weight. You can fill it full of fuel and put a small dog in the cockpit and still manage to touch the tail on the ground. When you are done showing off kick the coals to it and it will launch like a rocket straight up with a DA-50. Do I fly 20oz of fuel out of it? I'm afraid to say that that it takes a long time but I've done it. I just fly until I feel like I want to land or run out of gas. No stinkin time constraints for me.
Robert

LOL, he must like you better Jim. Mine were $79 for the "ice" (Maudib's old scheme) - BUT I did have him make some graphics for the engine too, which might have been extra.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Build question...
I am at the point of installing the nylon control horns on the wings, and in the instructions they have you drill pilot holes part-way through the control surface and then screw in the horns with no mention of the backers that came with the hardware (screws too short anyways). Is it strong enough to just follow the instructions? Or, should I buy all new longer screws to go all the way through the control surface into the backer?
Comments/experiences appreciated.
Thanks

Either way will work. If you go with the shorter wood screws, just make sure you screw them in, take them out and harden the holes with thin CA then screw them back in. I do it a bit different. I will not harden the holes, I'll take them out and use thick CA on the screws then quickly put them in. When my first one was taken out, those screws never budged, everything else blew apart though

No need to go all the way thru!
Drill about half the depth you'll need, and with a drill half the diameter of your screws.
Doing so will give you maximum grip.

Bubba, A1,
Thanks guys, I will take both of your suggestions. It will save a tiny bit of weight too...not that it matters that much with a dle55 strapped on!

What transmitter/reciever are you using Spod?
With my 9303/AR9000, I "Y'd" them left side/right side- but I have the ability to do very fine level of mechanical centering due to usung the H9 "prolinks". The 9303 doesn't support a "true" 4 aileron wing. If I'd stayed with my Futaba 9c (what I had when I bought the plane) I would have run individual aileron channels.

On my first one I had a Smartfly Expander on it for no other reason than I could. My second one had a 9 channel 721 receiver using a single JR matchbox and a 9303 TX.
My new one is getting a JR1222 and is being flown with my 12X and I'll be using separate channels for each servo and doing the mixing/matching in the radio.
If using a Y or non-matching power expander, just be sure to get the throws in all directions to match as close as possible so you get nice even rolling

both Right Ailerons: ch1
both Left Aileron: ch 6
[ch 6 is 'slaved' -to- ch 1 in Futaba 9C]
Left Elev:ch 2
Right Elev: ch 7

Head over to Futaba's FAQ web site for details on programming your 9C.....

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
tiger650, are your ailerons powerfull enough going through a y lead as theres a thread about current loss with y leads on here somewhere.
oldfart,9c radios will still need a y or equalizer or expander of some sort to couple the ailerons, its not possible given the available channels.
unless you know something about the 9c that i dont.
which is very possible.

Is this the way to connect 4 aileron servos?

How do I set up 4 aileron servos on a biplane?
Flaperons on 1 and 6 gives you a right and left aileron servo on the first wing.
channel 1 = right aileron
channel 6 = left aileron
channel 7 = right upper
channel 8 = left upper
Flaperons makes channels 1 and 6 work as ailerons (and also as flaps).
Now, we want channel 7 to work just like channel 1 so we mix channel 1 (aileron) to channel7 (aux1), 100%, with trim ON so that the aileron trim adjusts both servos.
We want channel 8 to work just like channel 6, so we mix channel 1 (aileron) to channel 8 (aux2), 100%, with trim ON so the aileron trim still adjusts both servos.
Lastly, we don't want channels 7 or 8 to be moved accidentally, so go to Auxiliary channel screen (9C) or FUNC screen (9Z), and set channels 7 and 8 (aux1 and aux2) controls to NULL.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Just starting to get to the engine install. I will pin the firewall and mounting hole areas as discussed in prior posts. One question though, my dle55 now sits exactly 6 3/4" from the firewall. The manual recommends 6 3/4" to 7 1/4". Is there a "preferred" distance from the firewall that I should be shooting for?
Thanks!
Thanks!
