Default Saito 82 thirst.

hi guys

am i the only one getting VERY poor milage from my saito 82

i have 30 years model flying behind me but cant solve this one.

it is in a YT Rush and both top and bottom end are leaned correctly.

bags of power and runs superbly.

OS 4 stroke plug, coolpower 15%, 14 x 6 prop.

no leaks, and the tank IS filling fully.

7 minutes flying only without risking dead stick, spending most time between idle and two thirds throttle.

i recently fitted an OS 90FS to the airframe and easily got 15 minutes but i need the OS for my Hype.

do i have a problem or is it just a feature of this engine?

regards larry3d

I have a Saito 72 and I was getting really poor flight times (8 minutes) until I leaned the engine out and adjusted the low end.

larry3d--oddly enough i have the same exact setup you do except for a 14x4 prop, i am only getting 6 minutes safely and have deadsticked it at 6 1/2 minutes--this motor takes a really long time to break in...it will take about 3 gallons before you see any real improvement but be patient and you will have a great powerful long lasting motor

the tank is 8 oz but mine is way nose heavy so i will not put a bigger tank in--remember to be patient and take what you can get for now as it will pay off later

i just put my 82 in a f40
thinking the flight times would be short
as they were when it was in my twist
10 oz tank 14x4 apc
was lucky to get eight min in the twist
but in the f40 :same tank/prop 11 1/2 or so
minutes per tank
cant explain it to you why but it just works that way

I have one with about 2 gallons thru it and I can fly 10-11 minutes and only use half of a 12ounce tank using 15% and an apc 13x7 or 14x6. Mostly 1/2 throttle but with several out of sight full throttle verticles with a spin back down. My 100 did not use as much fuel as my OS 91 4-sk in a corsair as the extra power let me throttle down and fly the same speed.

When fully broken in the 82 will drink a ounce a minte at full throttle.Half ounce at half throttle.Size your tank to how long and how hard you fly.

as someone else mentioned check your low end needle, that can REALLY affect the 'mileage' on a saito, even if it runs fine it might be off. my ucando/saito .72 can go at least 20 minutes with the stock tank.

Thanks for the replies guys.

A couple of people suggested the idle may not be leaned out, but I did say in my original post that I had done this. Also the size of the tank is irrelevant as I get good times from my 90fs in the same airframe. The engine has had a lot of CP15 through it now, several gallons in fact.

I think that I am stuck with these poor figures and am reluctant to buy another Saito now. I think that I will stick with OS.

Many thanks again.

I have a tiwst with and satio .82. I running a 14x4w apc prop and stock tank that came with the twist 10oz I think ? I am running around 8min flight time with a mix of throttle positions. Mostly around 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. Tons of power but a pig on fuel I thought. starting to look like Im not the only one ! But like the old mechanics always used to say you can have mileage or power what do you want.

I purchased my first Saito 82 this last summer. When first put on a test stand. It ran about 6 to 7 minutes on the first 10 oz tank. By the time I had run a gallon of fuel through it and leaned out both the high and low jets it was running 10 minutes on the same 10 oz tank which I thought was quite a change for one gallon. This is at predominantly full throttle runs. Some of the Saito owners that I know have told me that as it breaks in, getting it leaned out to about 300 rich of peak at full throttle is a big plus. Also they told me that it was very important to spend time getting the idle as lean as possible. So far their advice seams to be working for me, unfortunately I crashed the plane I had it on so now I either have to repair the funtanna 40 or buy another plane. Thinking about a modeltech twister, wondering how it will do on that or maybe a plans build Hots Bipe.

Hummmm... Decisions, Dicisions.

Forgot to mention the fuel I use in this engine is Wildcat YS 20/20. Also the first run was only at 4000 RPM.

It depends on the kind of flying you want to do. The Saito's offer lighter weight and greater power on higher nitro fuel than the OS's and most others. Horsepower doesn't come for free.
However, my Saitos showed a significant increase in mileage after they were well broken in. They will accept a leaner setting once they are broken in.
Trying to lean them out when they are new will likely result in back firing, throwing a prop and breaking a plastic spinner or bending an aluminum one.
Being patient paid off, I have no complaints.

I have a SA100 in a 6.5 pound plane(Fliton 330). I have a VP20 pump and run C.P. 15% with a little caster--Run from a 14x6 to a 16x5 prop. So far I have about 1.5 gallons thru the motor (put about 1/3 gallon thru it on break in on test stand). I have been getting about .6oz per min from the 4th tank full on the plane. I have a 12oz tank and am going to switch to a 10oz tank. My flying style is 50% IMAC and 50% 3D. ---very happy with this mileage on cheap 15%.

Sorry Larry,But at one ounce a minute fuel burn and you want to fly 10 minutes or more fuel tank size is very relevent.I have many Saito's and as said before look to at least 3 gallons burned thru motor till it is fully broken in.Also as said in previous post after break in a 300 RPM drop setting on full throttle adjustment is fine.Low end setting is as lean as you can get it and she will still transistion. We have also found that a OS F plug really works well in Saitos.I have 2 Saito 82's.One has 5 gallons thru her and It is on a Extreme Flight Edge 540t profile at 4 1/2 lbs.I fly 15 minutes on 10 ounces 20/20 fuel.We are at 5000 ft elevation so we run a little leaner.Higher up you get less fuel you burn, but also get robbed of a bit of power.

Im glad that they are doing better as the break in . I would guess mine has very close to 2 gal of Magnum 15% nitro 18% blend 15% syn and 3%caster. I really love the power and how smooth it runs. Its just thursty

I have half a gallon threw mine and 10 min out of a 10 ounce tank at full throttle the whole time. The engine is not fully leaned as it can't take it yet so i expect better. This is on 5% nitro which really helps fuel comsumption to be lower. I am switching to 15% once the gallon is done.

I have a .56 that will run more than 15 minutes on 8 oz of 15% Omega. My .72 will run almost that long too on same fuel and size tank. I have a .82 still in the box.

Maybe you need to recheck your low end setting. Maybe the HS too. I ran my .56 for a long time thinking it was a hog until I found out that I had peaked the HS in a null area. RPMs dropped, so I thought I had it peaked. I finally decided to see how lean I could get it since it was burning fuel so fast, and I ended up almost another turn in to peak the engine. I've heard that some engines have the same sort of spot that will fool you.

Hi edgeman55

Thanks for your reply. Of course tank size is relevant to the run time of an engine but NOT remotely relevant when comparing one engines run time to that of another which is what I was doing here. (same tank, same airframe).

Btw I am using O.S. F plug.

Thanks again

No problem Larry,I think with a little more run in and more tweaking of the needles you will be happy with the run times on that 82.
