Wing Loading for 3D

Guys,
Is lighter the wing loading the better it is for 3D flight?
I am wanting to scratch build a 3D plane, probly an Extra 330L for the RCS 1.4 engine. If the complete flying weight could be kept below 10lbs and the wing area of 1300 sq", then the wing loading would be about 18oz/sq ft. Is this wing loading good for 3d? or is it too low?

It depends on the size of the plane. If it were a funfly, that would be fine. Larger aircraft can have a higher loading. The loading of a plane that size should be around 24 oz.

Good 3D is more about thrust to weight and Reynolds numbers. Most of your successful TOC type airplanes have about 2:1 thrust to weight. They are are generally 35% or bigger because of Reynolds numbers. The lower the Rn the better. There is truth in the old adage that bigger planes fly better. They do!

Hi,
Information on reynoulds numbers can be found in the aerodynamic forum...the problem is you can't realy simplify their explanation without loosing its meaning so be prepared for some heavy reading!!
If you build the model light you can always add a bigger battery etc (or 2 ) if need be!!..i doubt being under weight will be a problem!!

No heavy reading required -
for that 1.4 - a good flyer will be 9-10 lbs with a wing loading of 18 oz ft.
been there -
this is a good engine but don't expect same power as a alky/nitro burning setup .
so stay light.
If al yo want to do is hovers and "3D- just stick with a model much like the rash of thick winged hover stuff on the market- -If you try for an EXTRA in that size (1300 squares" - you will very likely be overweight .
