My son and I just watched both videos on the shootout, and I thought it was very well put together. Chip Hyde didn't do as well as would be expected, but he was as down to earth as anyone could be. Quiche was totally awesome, as was Mike McConville, Bill Hemple, and just about everyone else that performed. My three personal favorites were,
1, Jason Noll- very radical
2, Christophe Paysant- smoothest manuevers ever!
3, Jason Shulman- all or nothing style
As I think back on the vids, it's really hard to pick favorites especially over Quiche Sominzini. Andrew Jesky was very impressive, and let's not forget Frazer Briggs.
I rate the shootout video a 9.9

I got the vids for christmass but it wasnt as good as I expected.
Aure it was really good and the filming of the planes was awsome but I remember seeing lots of film from the event like of Kyle Woyshnis and others of Mark Leesberg and other people that had better flying that some of the flrrstyles on that dvd.
I thought the guy that cleaned pools was hilarious though, he didnt fly all that well.

The production, the interviews and the plane shots were awsome but didn't like the filming. The camera alaways had a hard time staying on the plane. I was getting dizzy watching it.

I thought that Mike McConville guy did pretty good.

These guys are all at such a high level competition is very stiff.

The only true "film" made about our sport.
Awesome!
J. Noll- robbed as usual. Varying speed rolls were sweet.
CPLR- soooooooo smoooooooth
Hemple is a freak!...so fast and powerfull.
I liked Chip's tumbling sequence with the big Yak...to "Roller Coaster".
Good stuff...finally a film to share with non-modelers.

I remember now. That totally confused me. I was thinking is this from last year? I imagine they work for a long time to select the music, come up with the manuvers then construct a routine to the music. At least the pros.

How do you make a msitake in a freestyle routine woops? Short of crashing or crossing the dead line.
On the video, I think it is absolutely awesome. The only thing about it that is a little off IMHO is that it gives the impression from all of the flying footage used that the Shootout was a Freestyle contest, when in reality its not. Its a real, presision contest. The freestyle is a sepersate event held on the last few days and most of the folks doing the free just do it for fun and dont put in much effort to prepare. All of the prep work is to get ready for the presision part of the contest.
\Thats why CPLR's routing was the same old, as were a lot of them. Mine too. In fact even doing the freestyle for me was a last minute thing there, and this year I opted not to even bother with it.
I completely understand showing that on the vid though, the Free is a lot more entertaining to watch, but from a competitior point of view its not taken very seriously by most pilots and its not what the Shootout is about.

Also, if they did not spend much time preparing for the Freestyle there would be even more apprehension.
I would imagine that the judging for the Freestylee a bit more subjective as well.
There is a lot that goes into these planes and if you put one in I don't imagine that is good for the score either & these guys like to win.

That kind of makes my point about the Shootoout vs what it appeared to be in the video. The Freestyle wasnt a part of the competition, it was a seperate event like it is done at all IMAC contests. This years shootout was also the same. Most top pilots dont put much into the freestyle and when it doesnt matter at all as part of the primary competition put even less into it.
Events like the TOC and the Don Lowe Masters have Freestyle as part of the total score so it does matter, even though there its still only 10% to 15% of the total score. For tose events freestyle has to be flown so more time will be put into preparing for it and doing a good job.
At the Shootoout though, its not the case. Personally I had more fun at this past Shootout just watching it and not flying in it.
