I ran mine for 2 tanks on the ground, then put it in the air, and it has NEVER quit on me. Sounds like a mixture problem, but make sure you're using an OS #8 plug in it.

Default Break- In Question

I agree with the last post. I ran three tanks on the ground as well (with the engine on the plane, cowl off, and with the plane tied down) and the OS 1.6 has run flawlessly ever since (20+ flights). Often times when a plane stalls in flight prematurely, it could be a fuel delivery problem. Check your fuel tank (especially the clunk), lines, and connections. Also be sure the middle of the tank is somewhat near the level of the needle valve. IMHO, you shouldn't fly the plane until you get the engine running with a high level of confidence as one gets so worried about the thing quitting, its hard to enjoy the flight Is there a particular time in the flight or attitude the that engine usually quits?

I had an OS 40 on my first trainer that had the same problem. I replaced the standard tank with a Hayes, replaced the fuel lines, raised the tank, and used hose clamps - never had a problem again.

Like the above posts point out, it's either a tank plumbing problem, a wrong choice of glow plug, bad fuel, or improper needle valve settings. ALL modern glow engines can be flown reliably from the very first tank of fuel.

It's an old wive's tale in this hobby that engines require extensive break-in before you can get a reliable idle or a good running engine. Best break-in is in the air with a slightly rich setting. Ringed engines can run richer, but ABC motors are always run 2-cycling.

Just installed a OS LA40 in a funfly. Flew it after about 10 mins of ground run. But had a hard time maintaining idle or constant RPM for maybe the first 8 or 10 flights. Had dead sticks, needle needed to be regularly adjusted. But once its settled in its great..

Chicken or egg...the engine settled in or did you finally just set the needle correctly?

They aren't preadjusted at the factory. You need to adjust both the high speed needle and the low speed needle.

A hot plug (OS #8 or Enya #3) is also a great way to keep the engine running reliably when you are running excessively rich break-in mixtures.

Diablo,

I dont think I need 10 flights to set the needles correctly...been aeromodelling for about 20 years now...
It had a OS#8 plug. Dunno, maybe its a quality issue, some engines may need a longer breakin?

i have 10 gallons thru my 1.60 fx on my lanier edge, have never had a single dead stick yet , not even a bumble, might want to go over the whole plumbing and if that doesnt show anything, try resetting your low end needle, Mike.
