highstrut, shorten the arm and take your atv up tp get high rate throws, low rate thows need to be where qq said or lower. this plan has tons of elevator athority and it will be hard to be smoth with much elevator.

Hey guys. Just got through reading all a can find on the QQ Yak and the CH Tunnel Vision. Anyone have any comments on the skill level to fly either of these. I am still fairly new to 3D. Meaning I can hover somewhat, but usually with altitude. Getting decent at knife edge, harriers, flat spins. I have been flying a profile Burrito mostly. I am affraid the Yak is geared more towards advanced 3D pilots. Any thoughts or suggestion are appreciated.

Intermediate to advanced......On low rates its tame and easy to control as well as land..On high rates its a 3d monster ( as long as its powered properly) and is capable of way more than I am......I'm an intermediate level pilot.....I think its more the investment level that can give the before the maiden flight nerves...All in all its a very fun plane and I'm having a great time with it...

I failed, I shortened the servo arm & raised the ATV and ended with 18mm low rate and maintained 3D rate of 61mm on the elevater throw. I'm using a Futaba 8U transmitter, the low side of dual rate only lowers to 30% not 0% making it impossible to reach 8mm & maintain high rate.
I own a 9Z helicopter transmitter, I may switch to that to receive the elevater throws requested. (No ratchet on the thottle.)

Ok guys, bit the bullet and mine will be here tomorrow =) Only question left, do I use my OS160 or 3W28? Has anyone put a small 26cc-28cc gasser on it yet? I saw on FG someone was going to try but has not posted any flight reports yet.

QQ was going to do some testing with the volution 26 last week, when he has done it he will let us know what he thinks. i'm waiting to hear before i make my mind up. i want to use the 3W 28 as well, just don't want to spend 600.00 to find out that the wing load is to heavy to fly well. i want a pocket gasser so bad, i just hate glow planes. i do love the 72" QQ Yak i have with a OS 160 it flys great but takes alot of time to clean the crap off after a few flights.

Why Gas the 73" ? waste of airframe and performance...Drop the gasser in the 87" and have the best fun. It's my opinion only. But I believe if you go gas,go high end 50cc BME or DA or similar. The smaller gassers are great for Cubs and Citabrias/Decathalons and other scale/sport aircraft.Choosing a super performance airframe and then coaxing in a clumsy low powered gasser and putting a burden on CG and overall weight and complications makes no sense what so ever.
I am in the same boat.I would like a gasser, but it will be a 50cc or maybe 100cc,and be attached to the airframe that it does well in.25cc seems like fun,but I really doubt(and can confirm) they can put out the power if mated to an unlimited aerobat in the 70 -80 " span and 11-14 pounds.

i was looking at the 3w also but its rated same h.p. and more weight..plus heard about some carb problems...and ignition...the mvvs or 26gt is the same motor and everyone says they run hard and smooth with big power.as far as wasted airframe and weight everyone using nitro has had to put everything up front hanging over the engine under the cowl difficult to work on , i think the slighty heavier gasser will balance this plane perfect..i already spoke with quique about the 26gt he said this was a great engine choice...and highly recomended it ....now i have to build as light as possible...hoping to come in under 11.5lbs.

I have a 72'' and I will have to wait for someone to let my son try a 73'' I would bet that it is better but the 72'' is so good I am not sure how much better it could be. I have a OS 120 sp in mine and it weighs 38 oz and 22oz tank for fuel not the lightest setup but I love it I thought the weights might help you gas guys with your decision. we also have a 85'' on the bench it will get a DA50 and JR 8611 all around (except throttle)we have Hitec digitals in the 72 and I think they are not quite enough on the rudder and ailerons. I will let you know when we put 8611s in it if it is much better.

RCS 140:

Had the rcs 140 in a 75" overweight Extra. Engine performed very well and seemed stronger than many other larger engines. Sold it to finance another project, saw it flying last weekend and is still strong after a year. I would thnk the 180 should be better as to power. Also have been flying a ZDZ 40 for the past several years in a Hyde Cap-X. Thing thinks its a 50 or more, lots of power, use 20 X 8 Menezs. Guys tell me I am over reving the engine, I love the power out of problems. After seeing Chip Hyde fly his Doulble Vision and hearing the rpm, I am not over reveilng this engine at 8500. Ever seen a 3d plane fly backward? Hyde does this for about 10-15 feet with his DA powered DV. The way the engine sings, and barks, think its actually a 75 special that I have heard remors about. Spent a great afternoon with Chip, should have asked.

Got my Yak on Friday and just about finished building it. Man this plane looks great out of the box! Not a wrinkle in the covering. I was impressed with the generous hardward kit and did not replace any of it. Extra hardware can always be a big hidden expense. I still need to mount/cut the cowl, mount the canopy, seal the hinges, mount the reciever gear and balance it.

In the manual it does not mention pinning the hinges. Is the necessary on this size plane with the inlcuded hinges? I plan to seal the gaps top and bottom.

ttski, I didn't pin my hinges and so far there has been no problem. The plane is being put through alot of stress as well ( 3D manuvers)....What are the odds of all hinges on one surface going at once anyway......If it makes you feel better do it.......As far as balance I went with 174mm from the trailing edge "end" not root..( there seems to be some confusion with that) and all is well. This plane flies level inverted hands off!! Makes 2 and 4 point rolls a breeze.... What engine are you using? .....Good Luck....EMVIN....

Thanks for the input. I went with an OS160 witha Perry Pump and Brison Pitts I had it left over from the Ultra RC Giles that had a mishap. Servos are HT 5625 for aileron and ele, 5645 for rudder and 311 for throttle also Fut 138dp reciever. I plan to use a Skorepa 18x6. Right now I have a 2000ma NMH battery pack. I might change it so save some weight. I hope to get it all together and on a scale by the end of the week.

Has anyone tried one of the Jett Engineering turbo mufflers? I wonder if it would fit inside the cowl? Looks like it would add 500-800 rpm and some torque.

Just finished the main build and put her on the scale. It came in at 11lbs even. This included a Tru Turn 3" spinner to the combo below. I did not include the throttle push rod or servo extension. With these items it should still come in below 11 lbs 5 oz. One note: I did not need to use the battery mount over the engine to get it to balance at 185 MM. I think you could save some additional weight by trimming some of the ply (or drill holes) in the engine box and not sacrifice the structural integrity of the plane. You could do this and still hit the 174MM CG by moving the gear around. I can't wait to get it in the air but will have to wait a couple of weeks due to vacation.

SU29 I just tried this link to get the manual and it works. Not sure if it is the latest and greatest.

I now have about 20 flights on my QQ 73" yak, and I love it!!!! I put mine together with JR 8411's, Hacker C50 13XL, Dualight 10s2p for power. My flight times are around 9 to 10 mins long. I am planing on using the plane to fly the intermediate IMAC pattern this year. The plane flys silky smooth, and is rock solid in any attitude. I am very happy thus far with this setup.

For those running an OS 1.60 and the apc 18x6w prop, I found a really cheap spinner:

[link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJUN5&P=Z]http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJUN5&P=Z[/link]

I have one on order so I'm not positive it will work, but I don't see why not since all of the UCD reviews state that this spinner works with that prop and engine combo.

Also, where are all the guys with gassers? I really would like to hear a flight report, even if I've already bought a glow engine....

I have that spinner on a Giant UCD. It's a pretty nice spinner. I'm using it with an OS160. I used it with a 18x6 prop and a 17x6 prop. Seems to fit nicely.

Thanks

Top of the morning to you guy's.

Took delivery of my 73" yesterday. Very pleased with the build and quality. Certainly one of the best ARF's I've come across. Can't wait to put it all together.

After trawling through 16 pages (who's the nut in Argentina?), the gassers don't seem to be materialising[] An early post sugggested a ZDZ40. Well on this side of the big pond the recommended engines are gas only = Roto25, 35 or ZDZ40!!!!

I have a ZDZ40 in a big Cap232 which is about to be switched to the Yak 73. May take a couple of weeks to get it ready to fly (business etc) and will be pleased to let you know how things turn out.

I'm interested in the comments about the gear breaking on a heavy landing? This seems a common issue with ARF's from the far east[:@] Also it seems no-one has any issues with the flight performance or CofG (when you've worked out how to do it). So is this as good as Chips "Vision" Any suggestions on flight mix's

I splurged and decided to go gas. I should have an evolution 26 on the door any day. I'll post a 3-d report with the engine and Evolution's new inverted pitt's style muffler as soon as work schedule permits. I'll be using a 10 oz tank. From other reports that should be a 15 minute flight. For those interested the new muffler weight is 6 ounces even.
