thanks for the reply this is my first larger scale plane so hope my questions dont seem dumb...was also reading aboult cline regulators does nyone think this plane would benefit from one with, the tank location on the new yak?

with a OS 160 and pitts muffler on my 72" QQ yak you must have a pump to keep the engine from leaning out in houvers or long up lines. i mounted my tank over the cg. infront of cg location caused the trim to change in flight to much for me. now i don't need to change trim from full tank to empty. this has the fuel a foot away from the carb so i used the perry pump and it has worked perfect almost 4 gal of fuel and no dead sticks. perry pump $30.00 new set of landing gear $49.95 from bad dead stick landing or maybe $389.00 for new plane, many happy days at the field burning fuel in your yak ..... priceless!

i thought i was getting away from glow planes but i built the yak and now i just picked up 4 cases of glow fuel. they just keep pulling me back in.

I'm planning to install a OS 1.60 FX in my Yak, inverted. What in cowl muffler can I install with this setup. Or am I forced to side mount the engine and install the Slimline Pitts muffler.

Maudib - Do you know if the YS 140 recommendation is for the "Sport" or "DZ" model? Also, will the Slimline inverted muffler fit the fuse with either one of the YS 140s?

Ted, The plane quique is currently flying has the ys 140 Sport. He said it will fly an imac class with that engine. hope this helps.

One more question. how much of a difference in 3d performance would there be between a saito 150 and a saito 180 on this bird? Not looking for ballistic performance but hovering between 1/3 and 1/2 throttle would be nice. Im unsure what to go with. thanks for the help

TedG, Not sure, but I'd guess since he didn't designate that either was his intention. Again this isn't a HUGE plane and the 1.40 Sport should be very nice it... I flew an O.S. 90 fourstrojke on a 10 lb Extra and it barely would hover... Now put a 1.40 YS on it and add maybe 1/2 lb? whowee... seems plenty to me for 3D... Flew a DP Ultimqte with a YS1.20 at 12.5 lbs... it lflew very nice too... not wuite unlimiyed but hovered with a teensy bit of pullout... again 1.40 with 1 lb less...



Can't even begin to guess on the inverted muffler on the 1.40... is it a side mount or wrap around pitts? I'm pretty sure both would be fine... but as soon as I'd say that...

Highstrut.. your welcome friend... but to be honest, I think getting a tuned pipe in this baby would require some mondo modification. There just isn't room beneath the engine box, and behind that the gear block. I suppose a really motivated person could create a "half channel" where the pipe could sling underneath...

Also, this thing is gonna be a MONSTER on a 1.60fx with even an inverted side mount... and I'm not too sure the extra 800+ rpm could be appreciated. Keep in mind the tuned systems are pretty loud and have a "spot" where they get on the pipe... usually high end, where you'll spend the least amount of your time on this bird.

But it would be a fun project... so don't let me discourage you...

If you have a choice go with the 180. The bare weight of this pane makes it a solid 10.5+ pound build & if you plan to 3D it do the 180. Going with the larger 180 will also let you run cheaper 15% nitro fuels if you want. Not saying this plane will not be 3D capable with the 150, just that the 180 is a better fit.

I've been running some setups through motocalc... and if it's in the ballpark, the Hacker A60-M20 on 9s1p Kokam 3200s would give 1:75:1 thrust to weight ratio... running upwards of 60 amps at full throttle. Close to 1800 watts and 160 watts per lb.

Should be a nice setup... only iot needs a 24x12 prop... that might have clearance issues...

You can run a C50 12 XL with a 6.7-1 gear box on 10S and have a balistic power set up. I was running a 20X11 and didnt have clearence issues. I would go with the geared set up. I had about 2300 whatts at WOT. This was on my 72"

I really prefer outrunners and am trying to get away from 10s... was hoping to find something in the 8s that would do nicely, but not sure it's gonna happen... That is for radical 3D stuff. For IMAC I could easily rig up a lighter setup...

Looks like 9s though is the minimum series I can go... I could get to a smaller prop by increasing to 10s... but not sure...

I may just go with the 1.60FX...

The 1.20AX looks great too, but I can almost bet that balance would be an issue... It's a full 12 oz lighter...

I first ran 8S3P 6000mah on my 72" This had about 1300 watts at wot. It had pretty good vertical with this set up.

Well I have decided on a motor... the new HiMax HC6320-250



I ran the figures through Motocalc and it looks like on 8s this will put out about 1500 watts and have about 1.54:1 thrust to weight.

This is with a 20x10 APE-E and 8s 6000's... expected weight of 11 lbs... we'll see.

I could go to 3700's but not sure the flight times would be long enough...

Haven't settled on batteries yet...

i'm looking at the zenoah 26 that Ralph at rc ignitions works on. it's around 2.5 lbs with ignition and will spin a mezlic (spelling) 18-6 at 9000 rpm.

i also connected the elevator halves on the 72 so i could use 1 JR 8611a to save $ and weight. if you are setting yours up with OS 160 this will help balance the cg. i plan to do this on the 73" also even if i go gas. i wish i could show pic for you it looks and works great.

Im having some real trouble getting the right wing onto this plane. The left wing slides in fine but the right one seems to be hitting the top of the wing opening. What should i do to fix this? I dont want to screw it up thats why im asking here. thanks for the help

It's probably a tight fit where the sheeting around the socket is just a touch long...

Try and see if the wing fits in wthout the tube first. Insert the TE of the wing first (wing coming in at an angle) and slowly rock the wing forward inserting the thicker and thicker portion... this may pry the wingslot open enough to then try the wingtube. If you can get it in, then gently rock the wing up and down... NOT ENOUGH TO BUST SHEETING but to simply massage the socket sheeting to open up a bit.

Try putting the right wing on first and when the root just touches the wingsocket try pressing down on the sheeting on the wing a little bit to see if you can coax it in the slot... Once you do get it in, the first couple of flights should loosen up the wingslot...


You might also try a slip of plastic... not stiff, but not flimsy either and use it like a shoehorn. When the wing is close to the wingslot, slide the plastic in between and the push the wing tighter and use the pastic as a lever or shoehorn to lift the wingsocker balsa up a smidge so the wing slides underneath... then pull out the plastic. Use something perhaps like a thin pastic or metal ruler... Thin as you can get but still stiff enough that it won't bend over (but just gently bend).

The wings fit into the openings just fine. the problem comes when the tube comes into place. the front will go in but it is hitting the top of the opening further back. i was thinking of maybe slightly tapering the end of the tube so i could slide it in with the wing in the slot already. thanks for the help again.
