From: , SC,
Just bought a DA50 off of a friend. I've been wanting a yak for a while now. Just wondering if there are any good 14lb ish planes out there, I'm guessing about 25% or so. I'll be looking into QQ's site but dont know. I might want to find a little bit more budget friendly one. Any of you guys know of a good 25% or so Yak for a DA50?
Thanks

thanks. I havent been on here in a while. I'm reading around and seeing lots of yak posts. I'll keep reading. But if anyone has any comments put them in this thread as well!
Oh and I remember seeing a Yak in one of the JR ads in the magazines. There was a pro pilot kneeling down with it. Cant remember who. But does anyone know and know what plane it was? I cant find the ad anywhere right now.

look at QQ sominzini's aircraft co they have a wonderfull 85" yak that flys great, well built and the best customer service you could ask for. i have the 72' and had the elect yak. a friend just finished a 85" with a evo 45 on it and its a great flying plane. the 72" and his 85 both fly as good or better than my 35% AM yak. don't take me wrong i love the AM yak to. my next plane will be from QQ as well. i'm on the list for the new 73" for a small gasser and i am planing to build the 102" for my DA 100.
this flying thing is bad for the pocket book.

I would say go with the QQ Yak, but after reading the MAN review at 18 pounds, I'm not so sure. Of course, the guy threated it like it was a 40%er, adding smoke, dual 4000 duralites, a powerbox, pilot, all 5955's (heavy servos), abd a bunch of other unnecessary junk. Still, I don't know that it was 2 pounds worth...
If you use minimal equipment, you should have a TRUE 50cc-class plane in the 15.5-16.5 pound range. With that said, the Aerotech and Lanier Yaks are out of the question. The TOC is questionable, and the GP and CG Yaks ARE NOT true 50cc planes (too small). So, by process of elimination, the BME and maybe QQ Yak are the way to go.

Yea I'm thinking about the QQ. It is a chunk of change. I was wanting to add smoke but the engine's muffler doesnt have a smoke plug or whatever. i'm leaning towards the QQ. Is there any way of getting these from a distributer or something that could cut the price a bit. I'm sure its worth it, but...dang!

I would also take a look at aviatiom Nodels Yak 87" Do not worry about either the QQ yak or this one coming in at 17-18lbs. They have much more wing area than comparable models in this size range and fly terrific on a da-50

Merk,
I too could not drop the coin for the QQ......it's probably beyond my skills anyway....I went w/ the GP Yak but I might still get the BME 55....another thing is transportation on the 85+ ws....need a trailer so add $3000

I'm thinking about buying a 50cc size airplane and engine. Right now I think the 30% Yak from Aviation Models (TOC) with a 3W56B2 would make a great combination---Thoughts???

aviation Models is a Great plane but go with a lighter motor, BME 50 or DA-50. Wing loading is criticle in the smaller yaks. I personally would not put anything other than an os 160 in the gp yak at 78" ws or so jus not a good combo IMO

Bryan,
The GP Yak has an 81" ws, and check the numbers, the OS 160 is 32.8 oz w/o muffler, add lets say 8.2 oz for the muffler, thats 41 oz. The BME 55 is SUPPOSED to be 2.1 lbs + ignition/battery/muffler, any guess what that would weigh? Smaller tank and less fuel. It would be close.....plus the benefits of gas.

Don't forget that the QQ 85" Yak's price includes shipping.
It also comes with carbin fiber wing/stab tubes, wingbags, tank, pull-pull rudder cable set, a dozen ball links, 4 titanium pushrods (silimar to H9) carbon fiber tailwheel and composite gear...
Add it all up, and it's not so expensive... yeah you can do without some of the stuff... but the stuff you can't plus free shipping deosn't make it hardly any more expensive than other options out there.
It's all top of the line stuff and reports are that is flies great... since I sold my EF 85" Yak (expecting another one to come in but now they won't be anytime soon) I have an 85" QQ coming... DA50, stock muffler... based on other build reports I expect 16 lbs without any weight wrangling.
If you were open to something other than the Yak... Airwild just announced an 87" Extra 260 and EF's new plane is gonna rock the house...
The 260 is due in next month and the EF Yak... well, that may still be another couple months...
Options, options... but for Yaks, seems like the 85" QQ is THE stuff for 50cc....

Maudib,
I do agree, but remember, I said my skills were not up to all the CF parts anyway...... I paid $358 for my GP Yak from Tower, free shipping. I want to be at the QQ 85" Yak, that is probably why I will get the BME 55 or DA50 for the road ahead, even though I know it's too much engine for the 81" GP Yak. An OS 160 or Saito 220 would be great for this if that was where you wanted to stay.

EF is Extreme Flight... http://www.extremeflightrc.com
THey produced the 87" Yak that was such the rage, he initially tookl a long time to get it to market because of some issues with a first manufacturer and quality, finally changed manufacturers and released 300 or so that went like hotcakes and EVERYONE RAVED, had hundreds in line for the next batch (including my backup Yak) and they had some problems with the new manufaturer.
So to make a long story short.... the owner has set teamed up with his own factory... only EF stuff fom there.
The QQ Yak is made by the same factory that made the awesome batch of EF Yaks... in fact that was why EF had difficulties in getting product... QQ had placed such large orders that they were too busy building QQ planes to get to EF's. But they kept telling him... "They are in production" Well he finally made a surprise visit to the factory only to find no EF stuff at all underway and lots of QQ planes stockpiled.
Nothing against QQ at all... the factory should have told EF what was up so he could run his company accordingly.
Anywho... all water under the bridge... Since there are SOOOOO many Yaks that have been released in that size, EF opted to hold on re-releasing the 87" Yak and focus on yet another "take the market by storm" design.
I am privvy to a little information I cannot share, but I can tell you that based on the high performance and lightweight characteristics of his previous releases, including a SHWEET little 45" electric that I have and rocks the house, that this next release will be jaw dropping. Chris, the owner told me straight... it flies even better than the Yak, is bigger and at about the same weight.
I have the utmost confidence in his word to me.
Still... they may be 2-3 months off (I really don't know... didn't ask) Or they could be on the water... I really don't know.... I know Chris went there to train them in building techiques and oversee production... but mentioned going back to overee the first production run of this "new release".
I could see letting people think it was going to be further up the line, getting the first 500 planes in then stating "In Stock and shipping" Again... I'm only theorizing...
If you want a plane deleivered next week... your bestbet is the QQ 85" Yak.
