Default UCD-3D custom graphics let’s see them.

Let’s face it, the UCD-3D is one of the most popular airplanes out there right now. Everybody seems to like it except for one thing, “THE NAME”. When I got mine the first thing I did was toss the stickers. (Although I did use the small UCD sticker on the cowel.) I’ve seen some custom graphics in the 3-D forum so let’s compile them here so future UCD owners can get ideas. All you need is a graphics program, an Ink jet printer, Avery #8665 clear full sheet labels, and clear Lustercoat to fuel proof them. So with that said, let the graphic madness begin. This is my UCD. Simple, but it gets the point across.

Default U Can Do 3D with Tartar Control

The color combination on this plane was a perfect match for the Crest toothpaste logo.

How do you "gray-out" your canopy? Is it just paint?

Default Pactra PolyCarbonate Paint

I used Pactra Indy Silver. It is a polycarbonate spray used on RC car bodies. It has metal flakes in it. The picture doesn't show it, but it is pretty reflective. I just sprayed it on the inside of the canopy and trimed it out with 1/4" black striping tape.

Does that paint come in rattle cans or would I need an airbrush?

I just went to OSH and picked up a very cheap ($2) can of silver spray paint (OSH brand) which works fine.

Default Pactra Paint

Just shake, rattle and spray! It really sticks to the canopy. No chipping.

Pactra makes a rattle can RC Window Tint paint for the Lexan/Polycarbonate bodies. Make sure its warm when you do it, or else the paint wont lay down thin n clear (dont ask me how I know that). Mine is tinted a very dark, almost black color, but on the next canopy, I'll use a couple less coats, and spray it when its warmer.

With the exception of the canopy, I have completed assembling my UCD. I contemplated keeping the canopy clear, but I think black looks the best. For those of you that have used paint did you use steel wool or something similar to roughen the inside of the canopy before painting? I don't want mine to become brittle and flake off after glueing the canopy on.

Intrigued by the color match, I asked permission of Contempo to use his logo idea, which he graciously allowed me to do. I deviated with a little more information on it. Joe

Cool graphics, can you tell me in detail how to make my own graphics as you did? Do the Avery #8665 clear full sheet labels that you meationed go on just like a decal that you put in water?

I liked the way the UCD flies, just never cared for the way it looked, so I did a partial recovering on mine.

Avery labels are just that, self-stick labels. I don't trust them to be honest (unsure of the adhesive, probably get gooey when fuel gets to it). I use the water-realease decals. Here's a snippit from another post of mine.... describing how I apply the decals...

The paper I used was purchased from http://shop.store.yahoo.com/beldecal/moddecpap.html I've used other paper and this appears to be the cheapest I could find (please tell me if some one else sells it cheaper, this stuff is $1 or less a sheet, depending how much you buy). These were printed using a cheap ($100) HP 940C inkjet printer. After printing, I coated with 2 coats of TopFlite clear coat (fuel proof stuff of course). Best method to apply is to scuff the monokote with 000 steel wool, apply decal, then mask & coat with a light coat of Topflite clear coat.
