Well, after two summers of staring at this thing, I'm finally ready to take it up tomorrow. I'll have a buddy film the maiden in case I turn it into a yard dart. Wish me luck. There will be better 3d/aerobatics to follow if I don't turn it into a bunch of tooth pics off the bat! I'm just swingin' an APC 16/4W because it's all I've got at the moment. Should be slow and mellow for a first flight. Cheers.

If anyone has a broken katana and is looking to sell the Canopy please let me know, I offer $30.00 shipped.

The heat ruined my canopy and now looks like a pancake []

Well here I am reviving a thread from the dead...

I have an Ultra-RC Katana that I am in the process of reviving from a crash. It should not have been that big of a deal, I got behind the power curve doing a rolling harrier and before I could recover I smacked the deck and sheared the gear off. At that point there was no the damage and I flew off, but I had some great big ole side force generators that I had made on it which stuck down past the now gear less fuselage. Sooo, when it was time to belly in the right sfg caught and ripped the outer third of the wing to pieces. What made this plane such a great flier (light weight) also makes it susceptible to damage. The Pitts muffler on the os 160 also caught and ripped the firewall out. It was a lot of damage for simply bellying the plane in.

That was 6 years ago. The army sent me off shortly after and the plane has just been sitting on the shelf until last night when I decided to rebuild it. However I need to see if anyone out there has a few pieces left over from an old wreck. My canopy had melted and deformed on a hot day while it was sitting in the back of the truck. That is the main piece I need. My cowl also has some pretty substantial damage from the belly landing as well, but I might be able to salvage it, if someone has one available though then please let me know.

I am probably going to use the os 160 on it again for now, the plane weighed under 10.5lbs and the engine put out just over 20lbs of thrust. It had a stellar pullout. I have thought of using a light 30cc gas engine though. So far I have the covering stripped off of the fuselage and the right wing that I had to repair. I do not know what the covering is but the purple held up well and came off nicely, but the yellow has been a pia. It has ALL delaminated and the clean comes off leaving the yellow film behind. It has been hell to get off using masking tape and acetone. It has left the balsa tinted yellow but it is going to be recovered anyway. Here are a few pictures of where I am at now. The firewall has been pieced back together to use as a template, the new firewall will be 1/4 ply. The right wing is back together. If anyone has a conopy and cowl then please let me know, I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Well, as I noted earlier I have started to rebuild my Katana. I know that there are newer airframes available, but even if a bit older this is still a really nice flying airplane. Besides, I really do not want to spend $370+ on another airframe right now when I can just rebuild this one. As shown above I have fixed the right wing, when I weighed the undamaged wing and compared it to the repaired right panel the repaired wing gained only .1 oz. Not bad.

I have also decided to use a DLE35ra on it instead of the OS 1.60, the DLE actually weighs about the same as the OS. I also found a good surrogate replacement cowl, the cowl from a Seagull Extra 260 1.80 fits the Katana just about perfectly, it does not look exactly like the Katana cowl but it works. My canopy deck lip was also melted, the canopy itself was in decent shape though. So I cut the plastic decklid away and made some formers with 1/8" x 1/8" balsa stringers. Then it was 1/16th balsa sheet to remake the decklid.

It is going to weight more than it did with the 1.60 due to a smoke system, carbon tech gear and dual batteries, but I think I can keep it around 11 lbs all up. It has the wing area to carry the weight though so I am not too worried about it though.

Hey Joey
Did you ever get the thing going?
I just picked up one of the Katanas with a DLE35 too.
Just wondering what you think of the DLE versus the OS?

Take care
Bob

Would like to hear how you went about repainting the cowl. This winter I am looking to lighten/rebuild an AW Edge that I've had in storage and will need to repaint the cowl to match the new scheme.

Any steps/tips and types of paint would be appreciated.

Thanks
