ULTRA RC KATANA XTREME - new release

RE: KATANA XL - new release
M.C,
It definitely is a better video and it shows off the Katana very well.
beachflier,
If you haven't already done so, try saving the file to your hard drive. It is one huge (69.4 meg) file but only runs for 4:16.
It is an mpg video file and I often have trouble playing those directly from the host server but they play OK if you download them. The wmv video files always play well for me whether I play them from the host server or download them.

RE: KATANA XL - new release
Hi guys,
Hope this drums up a bit more interest/enthusiasm...sure is an awesome plane.
I cannot take credit for the video - it was filmed and edited by Shahid of unlimitedrc
...and of course flown by Nath
Matt
Ps. With this size of file you can't really stream it; it has to be downloaded

RE: KATANA XL - new release
I can't believe this thread is so dead[&:]
Anyway, I got the my Brison 2.4 mounted up and the cowl cut and mounted on mine. I have the stock Brison(loud) side dump muffler, so the cowl got hacked pretty good. This Brison spins an NX 20x8 at 7300 to 7400 rpm and is only 6 ozs heavier than the Brillelli 36 that everyone is going nuts over. Those figures correlate to 25lbs of thrust or thereabouts. Man, It's gonna be fun...

RE: KATANA XL - new release
Does the Brison make more power than the Brillelli, I have been leaning towards the OS 1.60 to stay way light, but am interested in gas and max power. If one was to put cost aside what would be the ultimate motor and still keep the lightweight theme of this plane or should I stick with the OS, I am having a hard time deciding on this one as I want it to be a great flyer and still have awesome power and pullout. RE: KATANA XL - new release
Lightest weight and highest HP would be a YS 160 DZ. As far as the Brison over the Brillelli, I'm only going by the numbers I got on mine vs. the numbers posted on the Brillelli 36 thread. If I didn't already own the Brison, I'd go for the Brillelli.

not sure what a YS 160 weighs but the Saito 220 is 1oz. less than a OS 160 when both are using stock mufflers, both engines spin with in 200 rpm's of each other,i am going to use the 220 in this plane, should be some real nice power to weight numbers.
Has anyone had any real problems with this plane?
ENJOY!

If one was to put cost aside then the YS 160 would be the best set up. That was me flying my katana/YS160 set up in the video that M.C posted. M.C also has a giles with an mvvs 45mg that flys sooooo light. This plane is so underrated and i cant believe how dead this kat thread is. I shall post here more often with pics and videos!!!!

RE: KATANA XL - new release
I flew the Katana-X and naturally broke one landing gear leg after it's first and only flight.
Sorry to say that the same old problems that plague the Ultra RC Giles were carried over to the Katana, like wheels that come apart and skinny landing gear that snap for no apparent reason. I think it is time for Ultra RC to save this plane by going to bigger landing gear or changing to the conventional type. They can afford a little weight gain. They need new wheels too.
Having had "exploding" wheels on my Giles, I put the stock wheels on temporarily when I finished the Katana during the Winter but did not intend to fly with them.
So, along comes a "warm" 45 degree day and the snow was gone off the runway and I rushed out to the field even though the winds were 15 to 20 mph and gusting higher.
The new Perry pumped OS 1.60FX ran reliably after one tank of ground running and adjustments.
The Katana took off after a very short roll probably due to it's light weight, it's tall landing gear and the wind. By the way, that spindly landing gear is longer than the Giles' gear and is the same diameter thereby easier to break.
Anyway, there isn't much to report as it was a short uneventful flight for engine break-in and to make sure nothing was coming loose. Nothing came loose.
The Katana handled very well in the wind, 4-point rolls were easy as was knife edge flight. And yes, you can do one handed knife edge flight. With the CG located behind the recommended range the Katana was easy to land had no tendency to drop it's tail during the landing approach.
I managed to land between wind gusts and it was a good slow landing but the right landing gear leg snapped off during rollout just as I began to turn. It was not a fast or skidding turn but the gear appeared to have been catapulted away from the plane. The grass hadn't started to grow yet and it was short and flat against the ground.
One of the photos below shows the torn yellow landing gear fairing which was twisted loose from the leg and could easily be slid off the leg.
I wish I had better news.

RE: KATANA XL - new release
I case anyone is wondering what's inside the landing gear fairing, it's a clear piece of angled plastic that is glued to the gear leg and wrapped with a yellow covering (see photos).
I tried an unsuccessful quick repair so I had to strip it down and start over.

RE: KATANA XL - new release
I will have to double check but i believe someone on the ultra rc giles thread showed a method of reinforcing the landing gear, sounds like it might be something worth looking into.

RE: KATANA XL - new release
Sounds like the Saito 220 would also be a good choice light weight and high power along with the YS 160. I am guessing there will be alot of vibration with these two, I wonder if that is going to be a problem with this light weight plane?

RE: KATANA XL - new release
you know i have thought about that, the 220 is a THUMPER! i have the 220 in a DPM 540 edge at 13-3/4 lbs. and it has rocket vertical, hovers at less than half throttle,i'll be having fun with this plane say at 10 lbs.,if it holds togethere? but the 220 weighs 1/2 oz. less than the os 160 so why not! not to say it would be lighter with a ys 160 and a slight edge in power, but i already have the 220.
ENJOY!
