Well, if you use Hitec programmables which is all I use now on my giant scale planes, once you get the servos programmed for center and perfectly uniformed ATV travel on ganged or multi surface servos, you can use the turnbuckles to get that last little bit of buzz out for a perfectly bind free movement and WAY more precise than 1/2 turn adjustments. 1/2 turn is a BIG move compared to what you can do with a turnbuckle. They are a really relatively undiscovered MUST. Plus from a convenience perspective, you do not EVER have to disconnect the linkage to make an adjustment and they are extremly light.

You definitely don't have to tell me the benefits of the turnbuckle. I'm also considering going with Hitecs for my 27% Extra just because of the programmer. It makes getting uniform travel so much easier, from what I've read.

Do you simply use 4-40 couplers to attach your turnbuckles.

I use ball links... Either will work though.

Ohh so you use the turnbuckle as the pushrod as well? My misunderstanding. That's probably the best way to do things. Too bad the longest they come is 5".

Sure. On giant scale planes the servos are typically setup within about 1.5"-2" of the hingeline.

Mike it looks awfully tight on that cowl.
Do yo think you have enough air going threw that thing, maybe it's just the pics.
What brand of spinner are you using?
Thankie.

Mike, Great job on the build. Some of the best pics and coverage I've ever seen on the threads. But dog gone it! It looks so good, I might have to buy one of these.......[>:]

I am pretty sure that those openings are enough for the YS .63. I run 1.20's 1.40's and 1.60's and they are all getting about the same amount of air. There is a big space under the cowl that allows the air to escape out the rear so it should be fine.

I am ALLLLLMOST finished with it. I installed the serovs today and got all of the linkages done.. All I have left is to go the the LHS and pick up the props and a spinner and install the receiver/battery pack and switch and that will be it.

I will have some pics up later on today or tomorrow... I am a huge fan of high school football and my team has a critical game tonite so they NEED me there... That might keep me from finishing up.

I decided to go with Standard servo's instead of digitals on the ailerons I really do not think that it will NEED anything more than that and the standards are about .25oz lighter per servo and I am trying to keep it as light as I can. I did put a 9151 on the rudder and may go ahead and put one on the elevator.. I am sure that the standards will be fine on the ailerons.
Pics later,...

I recently bought the SWB titanium turnbuckles from SWB directly - basically the same pricing as the H9's. I was ordering servo arms anyway - and I'll have to say the turnbuckles make everything lots easier to set up.

What's the SWB website? I've only ever seen their stuff at TBM and whatnot.

OK Here are so me pictures of the servo installation. Today just was not my day for pictures.. Could not seem to get everything in focus and the light right, but they will do..

There are 9151's on the elevator and rudder and JR NES537's on the Ailerons. That gives me light servos on the ailerons and PLENTY of torque on the rudder and elevator.

A few mods.
1. I chose not to use the included pushrods. They are extremely large in diameter, according to my calipers they are literally a hair under 1/8" and the supplied pushrod end clips that secure the pushrod to the servo arm were WAY too small, like 4-40 size. I did not weigh the pushrods but they feel pretty light considering how large they are. Also, they were so fat that there was no wat to get a good short radius bend on them. Z bend pliers are too small and the wire is so thick and stiff that it just dont bend sharp and clean. I am wondering if they are the right pushrods or if the factory substitued the wrong size. Therefore on the ailerons with a short distance between the servo arm and control horn I went with 2-56 and they are more than enough at a span of about 3". They will not flex, If I think they are flexing I will go back and slip a piece of CF tube over them.

2. On the elevator I used 2-56 rod, but I slipped a piece of carbon fiber tube over it to give it stiffness. I wrapped the ends of the CF tube with Dental Floss and CA'ed it so that the ends will never split.

3. I did use a pull pull rudder setup, this could be considered a modification according to the instruction manual but since the servo bay for the rudder comes on the bottom of the fuselage it was a factory part of the construction. I used a kevlar pull pull rig from http://bpassociates.homestead.com/bp.html

By the way,, that SWB stuff is awesome... I use a bunch of their goodies.

Well..... just ordered mine a couple of minutes ago. Keep us posted Mike, I will put the engine order on hold till you give us some feedback on how well the YS pulls it around. I am still debating over the YS .63 vs Saito .82 issue... I am leaning towards the .82 due to reliability (and easy of operation), but if the .63 will give me more power I am willing to put up with the tinkering and special fuels...

Great pics Mike. That kevlar pull-pull system looks food (I generally use the DHS setup simply because the kevlar is coated), and I love the location of the rudder servo.

I have had a 63 all season and it has run very well on 30%. I have owned just about every Saito and YS and to me the YS is worth the money.

Thanks again guys,,,

I know that Fliton tested it with the Saito .82 and LOVED it. There is a little weight difference so I am trying hard to make sure that it does not come out too tailheavy with the .63... Thats why I wanted to use the 537's instead of the 9151's but I just dont think they will have enough torque for the elevator and rudder.

I just put it on the scales for you... 5# 10oz RTF.... This is an old tru turn that I just used to get a rough idea for you, I am going to get a new lighter spinner tomorrow. Also, I used a 1700mah nicad and intend to use an 1100, thats an ounce, maybe 2.. It should come out somewhere in the vicinity of 5.5# or less.

The Saito .82a is a powerhouse of an engine. I really, really want one just to have it. lol Kinda like the 1.25.

I would like it if YS would make an engine that has the power of a Saito 1.00 and weighs <21oz.
