Default What engine for a 63" Ultimate?

Hello, as some of you know I'm scratch building an Ultimate Bipe. I was planning on powering it with a ZDZ 40, But I saw a guy with a 3W 60 in his 62" Ohio Ultimate. I want to have PLENTY of power for 3D and such, so now I'm leaning twards the ZDZ 50. But I'm still not sure that'll be enough. I was kind of wanting to put a 3 blade prop on it so up to 60 cc's should be fine. I have never owned a gasser, but I hate payin 15 bucks for a quart of glow fuel. I have no experiance with gasser, so I don't know which ones start up easy, have the best RPM's and such. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jordan

Helo Jordan:

You and I are in the same boat. I am scratch building the same size Ultimate Bipe. 63 inch wing span.

Mine is a scaled up Goldberg Ultimate kit. For a cowl I am using an Ohio RC 62 inch fiberglass cowl.

I will be using a Moki 180 on mine. Cost of no nitro fuel is $9 per gallon, not as cheap as gas but I can live with this price.

I have my bottom wing framed up and will start on the fuse this weekend. Hope to fly it around April.

I have not sourced a canopy yet. Do you have any ideas?

Zimpro marketing makes a ARF Ultimate, 62 inch wing span. They recomended the Moki 180

Default ultimate bipe

What kind of wieght do you think it will be?If you are thinking about a 60cc gas I would recomend a bme 50 or a 3w 60 I have had both and the bme is very light for its size, but I think the 3w had quite a bit more power.I have a moki 2.10 that I just got and I think it is going to be a power house and you can run no nitro just methanol and castor oil (very cheap)What plans are you building off of?Does it have foam wings or built up.If you need any foam stuff cut let me know I have been cutting some wings and turtledecks for several projects and I am also in Quincy.

I have almost finished scratch building a 68inch Ultimate. Having to make my own fibre glass parts for the cowl and canopy.

Power is a zenoah 45, which with a 20 X 10 prop will produce around 20lbs of thrust, however I'll probably use a 22 X 8 which should produce around 30 lbs of thrust. The model weighs 14 lbs.

I'm actually going to test fly today without the engine cowl as its not been made yet.

I'll let you know how I get on later :-)

Todd;

I am glad to hear that you have solved your foam cutting problem. I fanally flew my D&L Edge. I had to go with the built up wing kit from D&L. I am very happy with the way the Edge flys. But I did a crappy job on the wing. I may come back to you for a foam wing for my Edge.

Jordan you can save a lot of time with a foam wing, if you like building with foam. I think its a great way to get a solid straight and strong tapered wing.

I expect my Ultimate to be around 12 to 13 lbs. This with the Moki 180.

I have read that the Ohio 62inch Ultimate is around 18 lbs. WOW!

Hi guys, I've cancelled my build. I might be moving soon, and I don't have the money i need right now to do it. Todd, you were recomended to me by Roger Geere and Wayne(forgot his last name) both. I here you cut the cores for Wayne's 2 Clean Cuts. If I ever start up the project again, I'll call you. I love to work with foam, in fact, I've got Probond on my fingers right now from an Ace Simple Ultimate. I was planning on using a BME 55 extreme, or a ZDZ 60. Jordan

Oh yeah Tony, Fiberglass Specialties wants 133.50 for the Ohio canopy, pants, and cowl. Thats another reason I'm quitting. And I have a guy making me some carbon fiber landing to the right size for only $35. If you want, I'll tell him you want it and give you his e-mail since I don't need it. E-mail me if you want at [email protected]. Jordan

Jordan;

I just ordered Moose carbon fiber gear only one week ago. If your source does custom CF gear I would be intersted in his e-mail address. I am always scratch building something so I will need gear in the future.

I will also work with Todd again for a foam wing. Love that Edge! Which I had your wing instead of the one I built. Not proud of that work. And yet it still is a great flyer.

"Ultimate" Welcome to RCU. How did your test flight go? Post a picture if you can.

Default Ohio Ultimate

I am lucky enough to have an Ohio Ultimate kit. It is the 62" version. I started it about 2 years ago and got the wings done before deciding to buy a new house. Well now I am in the new house with a new workshop in the basement (took 4 months to build out) and now I finally put the kit back on the table.

I purchased a BME 50 for the plane and figure that should be plenty of power to do just about anything. I am a little concerned about prop clearance using a 22x8 so I am going to try a 20x10.

Hopefully I can have it done for Spring flying.

How heavy are these ultimates you guys have?

One of my flying buddies has a 10.4 pound 64" Ultimate and has a YS 1.40 on it. I think a 1.80 would be better for him but he still does all of the 3D / high alpha stunts with it.

Lighter is better. You put too big of a motor on it and make it too heavy it won't do what you want probably.

For the 63" I would try to keep it as close to 10 pounds as possible.

The Ohio Ultimates are heavier. The wings themselves aren't too bad but the fuse is not exactly designed in my opinion using the latest techniques designers use to keep the weight down.

The original prototypes were flown with large Webras or Supertiger 3500s. The plans call for a finished weight between 16 and 18 lbs.

I have weighed up individual components as I am moving along. Each wing panel currently weighs 1 pound. The fuse so far weighs 2 lbs but is not complete as the top turtle decks and bottom sheeting has not been applied yet.

I put the engine, mount, cowl, all servos (no batteries yet), fuel tank, smoke system, hardware, wheels, wheel pants, landing gear, cabanes, spinner, prop and any other misc parts in a bag and weighed the mass. Taking into account the 1 oz weight of the bag holding everything, the overall mass was 8.5 lbs.

So thus far before finishing the kit and covering, I know I am already at 12.5 lbs. I am hoping to be somewhere between 15 and 16 lbs which will be a good weight for this plane. If I come out below 15 I will be thrilled.

On another note, I spoke to the guys at Ohio before their demise and at the time they had highly recommended I use a Brison 3.2 engine and had many good reports from people using this engine. I purchased the Brison 3.2 on their recommendation and was going to use it. However, I decided to break the engine in on an R/C America Cap 232 I had aquired from a friend. That plane rocks with the 3.2 and is still in service so I didn't want to yank the engine. I heard great things about the BME 50 and it is slightly lighter than the Brison with as much if not more power than the Brison. I purchase the BME and I think its fit and power will be a much better matchup for the Ultimate.

Default Ohio Ultimate

Well guys,

I have decided I don't want to finish the Ohio Ultimate. I picked up a DP Edge 540 since I don't have much time to build.

I have the wings completed and they are perfect! I started the fuse and have setup the firewall to use a BME 50 on a GP glass mount. It should be at the perfect thrust angle and distance for the cowl. I jigged the fuse frame and it is also perfectly straight. I don't particuliarly like the way the wing bolt mounts are attached and have been trying to figure out the best way to beef the area up without adding too much weight. The tail surfaces have not been started yet.

Soooo,

If anyone is interested in picking up where I left off and wants a nice 62" gasser (you could still modify my mounting and put in any engine since the firewall is not totally tied in on the top yet and the cowl is untouched) please let me know.

I would like to get $250.00 for it and would include a beautiful 4" Alum (ultimate style) spinner (worth $50) and 2 3.5" brand new Skylight tires. The kit comes with a beautiful Aeroglass cowl and wheel pants and canapy plus most hardware needed to complete including a tailwheel assembly.

This kit will not take much to finish framing. Just finish the landing gear mounting and wing bolt mounts, top turtle decks, mount alum cabanes (included of course) and finish tail feathers.

Wings have servo tubes installed but servo mounts have not been done yet because I was still deciding how best to mount the 4 wing servos and leads.

I would prefer if someone would pick up from me as it would be difficult to ship at this point.

Let me know if there is any interest.
