learning to hover
I have a H-9 Ultra Stik 40 that I plan on useing an OS 46SF.I want to learn how to hover.I this a good engine,plane combo for this manouver?And what size prop will work great?And please any help on how to hover will be much appreciated.I plan on teaching myself.

I don't have an Ultra Stick but from the looks of it, it won't be a good hovering trainer.
There are so many good hovering ARF's
The .46 would be great on a Magic. or try any morris plane, goldberg extreme, etc etc etc.

Even with a bigger engine the ultra isn't the most suitable plane to learn hovering on. (that isn't to say that it won't do it) it needs more elevator so it is easyer to pull the tail back under the plane after it starts to fall out. I'm in the process of modifying mine by making a new stab/elevator for it that is similar to the one used on the UCD. A couple guys here on RCU have done that and like it.

A friend at the field has the ultra stick 40 with a 46FX on it, and it won't pull out of a hover. Stability seems ok, but it just doesn't have the power you need. If it's around 5.5-6 pounds a YS .63 will hover it. It's possible to hover pretty much everything provided it has enough power. Wait until you see a 1/3 scale stearman hovering, you'll believe it.

hey chris - im also in the learning stages of hovering im using a pizzas with a os 70 in it and it works great .it pulls out of hover thats the key, having enough power to pull out. keep practing you might have to invest in some new equipment

hey Garygee, I NEED to see pictures of a hovering "pizzas"! I mean, there are a couple of guys at the field that fly PBF's (pizza box flyers) but I have never heard of an actual pizza hovering!!!

My son has a Pizazz with an os61fx that does whatever he asks of it. I replaced the os46fx on my Goldberg 3D with a os61fx and it made all the difference. Can you really have too much power?

What airplane won't?
The Ultrastick may not be the best for learning, but it will do it. There is no reason not to give it a try...
Try an 11x4 or an 11.5x4 APC...Keep the airplane as light as you can and it should hover. I've never seen one with a .46 that wouldn't...Give it a try! Max out your elevator and rudder throws and go wring it out.
Take a look at the G2 thread and all the others around here and you will get some great tips on learning to hover.
If you want the best for learning to hover, it shouldn't take you more than a couple minutes in this forum to find it! Doesn't mean you shouldn't use what you've got.
Don't listen to the guys that tell you you need a $800 airplane to start learning.

Rocket is right, no need to spend big bucks, its all in getting enough control throw, prop selection, keep the CG as far back as you can... setup is important. the rest comes with practice.
