I'll ask here, because I got no response from the Giant Scale forum. Hard to believe.
I am planning of buying a FMG 2.4 M Raven (33%), that will have a final weight (according to a phone conversation with the Manufacturer in Germany) at around 9.5KG or 21 lbs.
He says the plane is build around a 3W 75, but I was wondering if that will be enough or if I should go with a 3W 85 twin or maybe even higher (100 class if it fits, since I really don't want to cut the cowl).
I have not owned a plane this size before, so my question basically is: will it be full 3D capable at 21 lbs with the 75 or 85 ? It needs to be able to pull out of a hover with plenty of authority, and do all the high alpha maneuvers with ease. The wing loading however has to remain as low as possible.
Thanks guys

Ulf,
I am flying a 33% Cap at 23.5 pounds with a ZDZ 80. UNREAL performance.
Sure you can put a 100CC gasser in it but why add the extra weight when the extra power isnt needed.
Look at my website for some 3D videos of this plane and motor.
The TR and hovers in the clips are about 1/3 power.

well, the price seems to be pretty OK I guess. If the engine is reliable and strong like a 3W or DA, the ZDZ 80 might be the way to go then.

If your plane is only going to be 21 lbs, youll be happy! Mine is closer to 25, waynes is 23, check out our vids and see what you think as yours will have even better performance!
If your plane needs the nose weight of a twin then there is just the money issue. Mine could use the weight of the twin to get some dead weight out of the nose. But the price/performance is great!

well, they told me that it is build around the 3W 75, so I guess that a single will balance it right. But then on the other hand, I think the 3W weighs almost 1 lbs more then the ZDZ 80 Single. Maybe should go ZDZ 80 twin. Not sure yet. Will have to ask the manufacturer.
Is the ZDZ pretty reliable ?

If you want to go with a ZDZ 80 I would get the single, not the twin b/c the single has more power (quite a bit) and is lighter than the twin.
If you really want to make it a monster you can put a tuned pipe on it with a 1' long header. It makes it very quiet and adds torque. You can then swing a 26x12 to 27x10 prop

I was just looking at the BME 100cc class engines, and they weigh the same or even less but have more power. Now I am really confused. Maybe a BME twin would be even better ? I know it's more $$ but maybe I can find a good deal somewhere. I guess I will wait and measure everything (to see if it fits under cowl) and also see how much weight the nose will need.

I agree with the ZDZ 80 single. Wayne talked me into it for my Hangar 9 extra. It is as smooth as any twin at idle or full throttle, and will hang my 27 pound plane at half throttle with only about a half gallon through it. I know your not supposed to but I just can't help myself.

I agree that the BME 100/102 is a great engine. It weighs a tiny bit less than the ZDZ 80 and creates a little more power. The best thing is that it idles soooooo smoooooooth, and sounds great!
I think the new 105 weighs 3 oz more than my 102.
The ZDZs are a better dollar value, so if you are looking for a single, they are a great deal. I'm not much for cast crankcases though, although I have not heard bad things about them.
To each his own.

the zdz is cheaper and when i was looking into getting into gas i liked the prices of the zdz but a couple of people told me they had case problems like cracks and it scared me away from them. i spent the extra money for the BME and im really happy???good things cost more
