The best hovering planes are flown by the pilots with the thumbs to do it.
Many of the current profiles hover well. There are several 40 size 3D planes like the Flip and the Laser 3D that hover very well, however I think the easiest 40 size hovering plane may not be available yet. If the UDC 40 size hovers as well as its 90 size big brother, it may well be the 40 size hover trainer.
Here is a pic of a ZN Line Madness. It is out of production.

I almost hate to say it but I will put my 46 size spad "Ciggypack" up against any plane in the world!I have 11 oz. Radical Edge 540 all the way to a 1/3 scale Laser 2000 so I have plenty to compare it to..It will do a hovering figure 8 in about a 25' area.Don't get me wrong as I like all airplanes but if you want to practice hovering and have a blast with a $5 airplane(except gear) that is ugly, make you a spad. There are a few designs that are good and most are only good at slow speed fun.The draw back besides being ugly and unconventional is you go through a lot of props before you quit for the day because you will! keep pushing the limits until you crash. The good thing is that usually only means a trimmed down prop and a bent landing gear. These things are unbelievable.Enough said. Have you tried a PQHOR yet? I first had ciggy pack, loved it, then built a PBF, way better than a ciggy at hovering, then built a PQHOR that outdoes anything I've flown for hovering. Took about 3 1/2 hours total from start to finish to build. Try it you'll love it.

Here is a movie of my grossly overpowered one, it has a couple crashes, and some other funny stuff!

The PQHOR's are extremely easy to build. They fly normally and will flat spin upright and inverted, but I like harrier/hovering the most. Last time out I was Harriering around the runway dragging the tail wheel, then pop it up in a hover and it just sits there, t-roll too. Richard walked up to it and grabbed it out of the air (don't tell AMA). Best of all is the fact that I can pracitise low, if you crash just start it back up and do it again. What fun

I have to agree that the PQHOR/QHOR design is extremely easy to hover, and you can do it with as little as a bushing .40. Check out JohnVH's vid, I was hovering the plane inside a pilot cage on my first flight with it! There's also no fear factor with this plane as you can dork it pretty hard before anything bends or breaks.

i can't argue with that, John! the QHOR looks like terrific fun! I think the minimal investment is a key factor. I was out flying with a friend recently. I was flying one of my profile designs that didn't cost a thing because all the parts came out of my "junk" box. Iwas tail touching, doing elevators, just having a ball. My friend was flying a 33% edge and keeping things up high a bit so as not to endanger his investment. He was wishing he'd brought a beater like me!

Well maybe a 25% one .40 is too small.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I can't believe no one has made a 40 size Edge yet. I think it would be popular like the GP Extra and Cap. Incorporate very lightweight construction to make it fly well.
