Hi
I´m looking for info on the Fun extra from 3W
does it have 1900mm or 2000mm wing span? I´ve seen both numbers....
and how much does it weigh?
can I please get some All ups, including which hardewhere used. or if someone have a un buildt one that they can weigh.
many Tnx

I have one unbuilt, so I can't answer your questions. I would like to hear from anyone who has built or flown this plane. It looks great. I bought the engine from 3W as well (3W-27 I think).
I am getting ready to start assembling it, but it will be my first gas plane and things look a little different than what I am used to.

Hi Leonard!
could you please but the parts on a scale to se the kit weight...
would help me quite alot in choosing the right setup
maybe you can take some photos too?!
thanks

I have one and have flown it
I don't know the full weight but I will put it on a scale and let you know
As for the plane, it flies very well no bad tip stalls easy to land
I bought the whole combo package with the 3w 24 motor
The motor has a lot of power and works very well with the plane
The only problem with the plane is that it is build very light not very strong
On the first flight, I landed what I thought was very light and the landing gear pulled off
I went home and fixed the landing gear and flew it again
I got three flight on it, landed and come in to fill it up and saw that the fuse side just be low the wing had a split in it
I think that this happend when I did some snap rolls
So with that said I would reinforce the landing gear mount and lay in some balsa up that sides of the fuse, next to the wing and you would be in great shape
Thats all I have done so far and I have about 20 flights on it now the motor is starting to come alive and I haven't had any other problems
I hope that helps

Hi
sounds very good!
I was thinking of building a Funtana, to get it light enough, but the Extra seem to be buildt very light and nice!
(for electric planes weight kills the flight time)
which prop do you use? know the rpms? just so I know about where to aim with my power system...
many thanks

Well torpis
I have one sitting and waitting to put the new Hacker C50 Acro motor with 6.7:1 gb and 30 cells
I can wait for the motor to come in (mid may
) so I can go fly it
I think it will be a very good plane in elec.
Please keep me posted on what you decide to do
I would be very intrested in having someone else's input on this plane
Thanks

Hi David!!
(I´m Henket at the Zone, are you there too?)
I was thinking of 24cells and a C50 L to get it light..
the Acro is capable of 3Kw I read... so I tought at only 1500watts and a big prop, a C50 L would be more then enough.
I like light setups, especially for 3D ships... 24cells and 40A giver plenty of power if geard to swing a 24x12

Great
I am rcman on the zone
I have a post about this plane in sport planes form, that I have been replying too.
I have been reading what Gary Wight did with the Funtana and was modeling this plane after that setup
Your setup may work out very well
Can't wait to hear
Do you have the plane?

Hi
no plane yet...
thought lighter is better.... you probably know the story as good as I do... but in the videos he uses a smaller prop, and inputs 2100watts, then changed to a larger prop and diffrent wind motor, 24x12 APCE, now he has same power at much lower power input!
so I thought if I go with 24cells, and big prop, it will be a very good setup
especially with the nes KAN cells... 2800mah in a CP1700 weight cell, with even lower internal resistance.
can´t wait!

I am in the process of assembling this model now and I am struggling alot. It is my first gas engine, and the installations instructions (which are minimal to begin with) are in German. The plane looks great, but is built very light - be careful with the landings.
I have been talking with Bobby at Cactus Aviation and he has been very helpful, but the engine install is not even close to done and I am getting frustrated.
Will keep you posted.

Hi
sounds good with such a light airframe!
hope you solve the problems soon!
maybe you can upload some pix and we´ll try to help out

I don't know if pics will help, but here is the email I sent to Cactus:
I have been talking to you on the phone about my Fun Xtra and engine install.
I decided to just write with the questions. If you would rather talk about it on the phone, just email me and I will call.
1) Aluminum cone on carb. When I tighten this cone in place, the choke binds and will not move.
2) Choke/throttle setup. The instructions show an extention on the carb throttle arm, but it isn't clear how to mount it or what to use. They also show a prushrod from the choke (to another servo?), but I don't see the choke pushrod on any of the install pics on your site. Is a metal pushrod OK (alot of people say not to use metal for gas engine throttle links)?
3) Muffler: there is an extra port on the cannister muffler (smoke?) - do I just leave this open?
4) Header - Is it ok to cut it? It looks like it will be about an inch too long.
5) Ignition: there are four connections from the ignition. One to the engine, one to the battery, two more - to what?
6) Engine plumbing - the vent line exits the bottom of the fuse. What keeps gas from siphoning out? Do I use a one way valve?

Making progress.
I forgot about weights. Will get some crude weights tonight.
The engine install is going ok. Bobby at Cactus Aviation is friendly, but as of yet hasn't been much help. I am waiting for an email reply.
My major breaktrough was on the binding I was having with the carb intake cone. It was hitting an E-clip on the carb. Byy rotating the E-clip so the open end was pointing toward the cone, the binding went away. Simple, but not obvious (at least to me).

Question #6 (jldecarlo) I can handle. With all gassers, the best setup is to use two lines thru the stopper. One line goes to a clunk. The other line (vent) just stops in the top front of the tank. Route this vent line so that it exits at the bottom of the cowl (overflow). In upright flight, fuel cannot siphon out because the vent is in the airspace at the top of the tank. In inverted flight, the overflow line is higher than the tank so fuel cannot fall out.
Put a "T" in the line between the carb and the tank for fueling and de-fueling. plug this line after fueling.

Weights:
Fuse (with ignition, elev servo x2, rudder servo, throttle servo, header and cannister mufflers) 3 lb 7 oz
Wings ea. (with servo) 1 lb 5 oz - 6 lb 1 oz total
Engine 2 lb 10 oz - 7 lb 11 oz total
Gear and pants (no wheels) 10 oz - 8 lb 5 oz
Cowl (very lightweight) 2.4 oz - 8 lb 7.4 oz
Tube 4.2 oz - 8 lb 12 oz
Canopy and top turtle deck 6 oz - 9lb 2 oz total
Not included :
batteries (for ignition/receiver)
receiver and switches
wheels
pushrods
prop and spinner
tank and fuel tubing
My guess is that 11 lbs AUW (listed on the website) is possible, 11.5 lbs is likely - maybe less with lithium batteries (I am using NiCds)

A couple of add'l comments.
The tank is very small. I would guess no more than 12 oz. There is a molded tray for the round tank, and substitution would be difficult. I know gas engines are more fuel-efficient, but a long flight time seems unlikely.
The spinner has no prop cutout and the backplate is not drilled for the 3-w six bolt pattern. I am thinking about a Tru-turn, probably a $60-70 add-on.
The gear is not mounted very sturdily. Any really hard landing will take it off. It won't be easy to get at, so I am going to give it a try as is. I hope the plane will be light enough to be a real floater on landings.

Hi
Many thanks for the weights!!
Now I know roughly where I will end up with an electric version!
about 5kg(11lb) with 24 nimh batteries and 10lb with litium.
calcutaled power to be close or just over a 3W 24, 18lb thrust.
This will be fun!

Sorry Pugs.... Didn't know anyone actually read my site
I was just thinking the other day that I've got quite a few updates I need to get up on line. The biggest problem I have is getting the airplanes assembled and ready to take photos. Maybe I'll writeup the test and post it, and update it with photos when I have the time. Although I have lots of photos ready from Superman Jet week in Illinois last month.
Thanks for the cattle prod to get me going
