Default Front Yard 3D+Video

Hey guys, I figured some of you may be interested in a great little front yard 3D plane I designed. It's a total blast, and It's cheap too. It's electric so it won't bug your neigbors either. Great plane to practice/learn hovering with without dragging all of the "Heavy Iron" out to the flying field.

I'm getting over 8 min. of aerobatic flight on the little 8 cell Sanyo 4/5 AAA 720Nimh pack. It'll hover about 7.5 min into the pack. To say I'm impressed with this set-up would be an understatement. This is the most fun I've had with a plane in a long time! It was a little windy so it was kind of hard to hold it in a hover. The wind would kick up and push it around. I'm sure if I were indoors it would be much easier to hold it in place. Plus I'm no pro either. WAY TOO MUCH FUN TO BE LEGAL!

Here are the videos: www.foamyfactory.com/videos.htm

Here are the specs:

Built from fan fold foam
WS 37"
AUW 13oz
WA 360sq"
Thrust/wt. about 1.5:1
Power: GWS EPS 300-C "D" gearing (6.6:1 gearing)
Prop 12x6 GWS
Batt. 8 cell Sanyo 4/5 AAA 720mh NiMh
Speed controller Castle Creations Pixie 20P

Total cost (minus radio gear) under 50 bucks... Oh yeah, plans are free too... I'll post a link to them as soon as I put them on my server.

Here are the plans. They are tiled .pdf documents. You can print them on regular sheets of paper, then tape them together. Super easy!

The GWS EPS 300-C D is listed as producing from 7 - 14 ounces of thrust (found this on microrc.com). How do you get more thrust? I have a crazy max at 13 ounces, but it will not hover (power to weight 0.9). I am very interested in this scale of flying (13 oz hoverbatic).
I assume your pack is about 4 ounces of the total auw of 13 oz?

DMcQuinn - In order to get more thrust out of the GWS 370 motor, you must re-time it. Very easy to do. Here is a step by step tutorial on how to do it.

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...threadid=97414

After re-timing, I get 17+oz. of thrust measured on my thrust stand. In stock form, the GWS motors are timed to run clockwise. In the gearbox, it runs oposite (backwards). So, by retiming for reverse rotation, we can get the performance back that would be there in forward rotation. If you time it a little further, you gan get more of an increase, but slightly less motor life.

Read the thread, and it will shed some light on the subject.

Kyle - Fan Fold can be hard to get in some regions. It is used for house insulation. Down in Florida it is not used much. From what I understand, if you go to Lowe’s, you can have them order it from their distribution center. It might take a while to get, but a bundle of fan fold will build about 20-30 planes. Check with your local Lowe’s. Go to www.foamfly.com Lots of info there about how to find fan fold, and he has a UPC scan tag you can print and bring in to Lowe’s to help ordering.

RSands - At this time, I’m not releasing the .dxf files because I’m working on a built up version that may become a kit at one point.

That's alright, I understand. I was more curious than anything, I designed a "P3D" about a month ago that in concept is identical, but built from coro, for a 40 size motor. Wanted to see how close our designs were. (mine can be seen here http://www.rcuniverse.com/showthread...hreadid=699653). I too am in the process of making a built-up balsa version. I've been down the kit building road, and it's not an easy one. Good luck to you!!

Av8er Tim

Do you happen to have a picture of the battery mounted. I am in the process of building mine. I could only find the Pink fanboard. It is 1/4 thick. It is coming along pretty well. Thanks much for the plans. Here is a pic.

Look great so far. Just be aware that the pink stuff is a little heavier than the blue foam so your AUW will probably be a bit more. I'm getting ready to go to work right now so I'll post a pic. of the battery instalation later (lunch time).

Finnz - here is the pic. Pretty self explanitory. Just cut the hole so you have a bit of room (fore and aft) to slide the batt. for CG adjustment. Cut the height of the hole so the battery pack is a snug fit. I use a piece of scotch tape to secure the batt. to the bottom of the wing.

Huddle - I'll post some links later for some good sources. Here is a link to the construction thread. I'm also working on an Ultimate Bipe.

Thanks..., yes it knife edges pretty well. It does have some coupling (pitch toward the canopy) that I need to sort out. I increased the side area a bit on the plans version too. After I get that sorted out, I don't think it will have any vices (for what it is of course).

I'm getting ready to put in a Razor 350 brushless in it. Should realy rock with that! Here's a pic of the Razor motor. The silver motor is the stock GWS 370 motor for size comparison to the Razor. Mighty big punch in that tiny little Razor!

Well I finished mine. I stuck to the plans as close as I could. I used the pink foam and 1/4" dowels for the fuse and Spar. I am really impressed with the way it flys. I love it. Here is a video of the 3rd flight. It was blowing about 10mph. Later in the evening it was perfect. I will try and get a better video soon. This thing is a ball. Thanks much for the plans Tim. I want to make an Edge now.

I got it now.....I just had to download the whole file to my PC and then play it locally.

Makes me want to go out and build one of these things now!

Default Hey Finnz and Tim

Awesome video and planes guys!
Okay I'm off to Lowes for some blue fan fold foam today! Tim if you could post a link for the Razor 350 brushless and other electronics that would be awesome sir!

Finnz what motor, prop and servos are you using? Ever since seeing the video of the Mr Hicks Tribute, i've been dying to have a small indoor-outdoor electric. Thanks guys

I am using a re-timed GWS EPS 300-C "D" gearing (6.6:1 gearing)
Batt. 8 cell Sanyo 4/5 AAA 720mh NiMh and GWS 12-6 prop. A GWS 400 speed controller. Hitec HS-55 servos. This thing is a blast. And in the video that is one flight. My dad was taping it and put the camera down and came over and wanted to fly it. I get about 8 min a flight. About 5 min of full hovering. My dad is a huge fan of cubs now is thinking of building one of these. Sweet.

I have a question, My LHS does not have the 6.6 gear but they have the 5.8. Would that be ok? If so what combo would i have to use to get the same power.

I have the foam ( pink ) and a couple of sevros. Just have to get the rest. Should have it by next weekend.

Thanks

I'm going to start building mine soon, I have been having trouble getting the blue foam, but I think I finally found a Lowe's that has it. I am going to build it a little different from your design, it will have INSANE control surfaces. I will send pics and possibly video if I can find a videographer(someone at the field who isn't doing anything.) Thx for the plans and info. -Dan
BTW a Hacker B20 15L is going in mine, it ought to be a 3D rocket with this motor.

Here is another video guys (not me flying). Powered by a Razor 300 Brushless motor and 3s E-Tec 1200 LiPo's

http://www.silentflightonline.com/Si...mages/1241.wmv The punch out after the parachute (end of video) has to be seen! Awsome performance!

Finnz - Looks awsome! Looked like it was pretty windy too. Hope your having fun!

da king - The 5.8 would be OK on an 11x4.7, 8 cells. Maybe an 11x6 too. I don't have that gearing set-up, but I'll check for prop set-ups others have used. Should work fine though.
