Default Flip 3D & OS 70

Hi there, folks...
I got a Flip 3D, and even before I tried to flight with that original-confusing scheme, I came up with some ideas... I think it got interesting. (Look at the pic)

Well, the problem is: THE OS 70 is simply isn't enough for this plane.
That's ok, I can hover at half throttle, but when it starts to Torque Roll, humm let's say I go to full and it just refuses to stay there... I'm running Cool Power Pro Pattern 20/20 fuel and an APC 12x7. Will a 13x6 or even a 14x4 (if it has enough clearence) do it?? Or will I have to look for a new engine?

Thanks a lot

Looks nice. A guy at my field brough out the first flip Ive ever seen in person and yours looks much better in my opinion than the stock scheme.

I have an Os 70 on my flip and it is an awsome engine for the plane. I run an apc 13x6 on it and it is perfect. There are some pics of me flying my flip 3d in my gallery. Good luck!

Alex,

Great pictures.

I've been looking for someone who's actually built and flown the Filp to ask about CG. I'm building one now, but read a review in RC Excellence that said there is a problem with the CG due to the servos being mounted toward the rear. It seems a bit odd to me, but the reviewer had to put 8 ounces (1/2 pound) of lead on the firewall to get it to balance to spec. He had an OS 52 Surpass and said it flew OK, but did not have enough vertical. He took it back to his shop and remounted the rudder and elevator servos near the throttle servo (which he says weigh 3 ounces for both) inside the cabin.

Can you tell me what servos you're using for the elevator and rudder and whether you had to add any weight to get the plane to balance? Maybe not considering you're using an OS 70 which is heavier than a 52...

I was planning on taking the OS50SX I have on my Magic and using it for the Flip.

Interested to hear form you.

There is no balance problem with the Flip, but it does depend on what motor you are running.

With a 40/46 size motor you may find you need to move the battery pack over the tank ( with none pumped motors you will have to mount the tank in the forward position).

With a YS63 or Irvine 53 or OS 50 you will need to move the battery pack further back or add a small amount of lead.

I have a YS 63 and with the battery pack under the wheels mount and this had the C of G at 140mm from leading edge. This gave a VERY stable, but not too exciting plane. Aim for 150 to 155mm back from the leading edge, and you will find the Flip will be fantastic, but still keep some stability!! To get mine to 150mm back I have added 3/4oz of lead to the tail. Once I am happy with the flying I will reposition the battery pack and remove the lead.

I like the way mine flys at 150, but as I get more air time ( i have only had 1.5 hours to date) I may move it back. At 150 it is totally neutral trim upright or inverted.

I have fitted two Hitech HS5245's at the back driving each elevator half, and closed loop connection to the rudder driven by a Hitech HS 5945. The ailerons use the same servos as the rudder all powered by a 1300Mah MH pack.

You will need more aileron movement than the instructions say, but the elevator is pretty sensitive, and is worth trying before going to very high movements. Mine uses just a little more than standard and still loops/flips in its own length.

Hope this helps you

Right... so, I gotta try the APC 13x6...
With the 12x7, the plane has poor vertical, and well... I can hover it, but not torque roll (it falls as it begins to turn).

Thank you all for your comments...
By the way, mine is simply TOO stable, I think I'll work on the CG a little bit more.

I don't understand, how can the plane hover at 1/2 throttle, yet fall in the torque roll?

The amount of thrust required is the same for both the hover and torque roll, ie thrust=weight of the plane.

Default Got it...

Now I got the answer to my problem...
OVERHEATING!

Yeah, yeah... Even using 20/20 or 30% Heli Fuel.
I opened a very large hole on the cowl and performance got a little better, but not the way I wanted. I'll try to remove the cowl and fly again...
