3W Fun Xtra - Aaarghhh!!
#29
I put another handful of flights on mine this weekend, and have more comments. The 3W 18-8 will probably stay on the airplane, since I like its characteristics. It also creates a lot of braking which is nice, since I can literally dive it to the ground, then flare it and land it in a short distance. It doesn't seem to build up a lot of speed on the downlines.
Landings are real easy and very gentle. I just start a flare about a foot off the ground then let it ease closer and closer. I keep it off until I have just about full up elevator. At this point it either makes a nice 3 point landing, or the tail touches then the mains. Never a hit of a dropped wing. When in 3D rates, its wild. You can give it the sticks and it will wind it self up into a nice little ball, tumble into wild gyrations, etc.
I had it in an inverted flat climbing spin by just adding power and playing with the sticks once I enter the spin.
I get about 12 minutes per flight with the supplied fuel tank. I do notice a trim change during the flight about 1/2 to 2/3rds in to the flight due to the fuel tank placement. As I burn off the fuel, it need some down added. When I take off on the next flight, I have to add a click of up trim.
All in all, its definitely a keeper!

Hi All
I have perused the posts regarding the Xtra Fun, which I am currently "fighting" with.
As a modeller with 31 years experience (solo'ed @ 9 !!), I have found this kit to be frustrating in the extreme to assemble. Add to this the fact that this is my 1st gas installation as I previously used the ST range (3250, 4500 etc) of glow.
I hopefully will be able to struggle through the list of parts and match them to what I received. My biggest problem is that the instructions I received, there is no mention of control throws for any of the surfaces. My World CAP 232 snaps on elevator application in excess of 35mm, but as this is a 3D, maybe more is required. Where do I start for a safe 1st flight ??
Any input on this any other useful information, would be greatly appreciated !!
Regards

Did you ever get squared away on the control throws? If not, I can go measure mine for and let you know. Hopefully, you got past the stumbling blocks and are now flying this airplane. Once you do, you will forget about any issues you might have had with building it. I'm ordering a second one for a backup to my first. For a small everyday throw it around the sky airplane, this one is the best I have flown so far. Outstanding power, control response, and 3D abilities.

Hi Stephen
Thanks for the offer of information.
Due to business commitments, I have not been able to get much construction done in the last month or so. But now I am ready to complete this ARF.
There are 2 main areas I need info on :
1.
The control throws as previously discussed.
2.
The wiring from the ignition unit (4 wires). How and where do they connect ?
I am assuming 1 to the engine, 1 to the battery, and the other 2 with a cut-out switch inbetween. However, I am reluctant to add power to the unit when I am not quite sure of the wiring.
I am taking slightly more time on the construction as I am heeding the problems that have shown up on this forum and beefing up where necessary.
I would really appreciate it if you could give me a brief description of the ignition wiring as well as the control throw set-up on your plane.
Regards

Mark,
I'll send you an e-mail with my home phone number. Call me and I'll go over all this for you and get you squared away. I will be posting a complete build review of the new Xtra Fun on my web site during the winter. I purchased another one so that if something happens to my first one, I'm guaranteed to have another one. I like the airplane that much!

Oops...silly me. I just noticed you are in So Africa. Call me collect if you need this info asap. Otherwise, I'll try to go fish it out and post it in the next couple days. Sorry I dropped the ball, since I told you I would get you this info a while ago.
