RE: yak , sukoi ,edge ..???
Sukoi : Better get a yak...
Yak : Well proven design, 54 id the best compromise you can find between 3d and pattern, but as I have heard the 55-SP is very hard to beat in IMAC
Edge: More stable in 3d, worse to fly straight lines
Extra: Close to the yak
Caps: Still good but a little behind the rest
Giles: Better snaps, worse 3d
just my opinions,
Daniel

RE: yak , sukoi ,edge ..???
It has way more to do with who makes it. And less to do with the full scale version it's based on.IMHO. As far as the round cowl. I have a bunch of flights on a QQ Yak. While sorting out some fuel issues I flew it without the cowl. Maybe QQ could tell in difference in flight. I could not. I also fly a few profiles. Besides the knife edge advantage. There is a difference when hovering in the wind. So maybe on some planes the cowl will make a diference?

RE: yak , sukoi ,edge ..???
I am new to 3D too but have been around RC planes for a while. I want to get a 3D plane to step up but really want something different. Everywhere you look you see Yak, yak, yak... Extra, Extra.... I want something that looks like a real plane (no profiles). I would put an Edge third on the list of the most like a belly button list- everybody has one, followed by a Sukhoi and the Giles. Maybe it is a little closer with the Sukhoi and the Edge but....
That is what puts me at the stupid end of 3D I guess. I would rather have something different than anything else at the field, even if it "does not fly as good."
But I probably don't fly as good as the guys that say that either.

I prefer the Extra 260 over the Edge 540, ive had one of each set up identically from the same company. The Edge seems to land slower and easier, but i has a lot more coupling issues. If i had to choose between the two id go with a 260.

I think you'll find that there is a reason everyone flies the same planes. That being said, there's no reason that any plane can't be made to 3D. The first issue is power to weight ratio. Secondly, the control surfaces need to be large, and have lots of throw. Straight wings (no dihedral) are a must, plus a symmetric airfoil. Beyond that, it can pretty much look like anything.
Personally I like Yaks and Sukhois - something about those radial engines I guess. But for something that's seen a bit less, I'd choose a Katana.
