If you guys think 3, 4 or 6 or more ounces of weight on a craft with a wing loading equal to that of a 3D ship will effect flight........... then ya...... talk to me when you have some experience to draw from.......
Granted, setup becomes more critical but if you're just throwing it around up there hovering hands free etc etc..............then you would want it to be as easy as possible..........Enjoy....

Actually I am talking about more like 10+ ounces.
Lighter engine-4 oz
Weight taken from the tail-2 oz
Lighter radio equipment-4 oz
Lighter muffler-2 oz
Lighter carbon landing gear-2 oz
Little nit picking stuff like foam-1 oz

15 oz

And yes it does makes a huge difference. Even if weight savings would be dropped by 8 oz. On a 4 lb plane that is 13% weight savings.

And yes i do have experience with this type of weight saving as I saved 6 oz with my magic and it made a huge difference in the performance.

Oh yeah, I'm in my late twenties.

If you take a 4-5 pound plane and can knock 8oz off that, then you'll probably notice a considerable difference in performance. Some designs will benefit more than others. The Magic definitely seems to be happier if it's under 4 pounds.

I have a cougar which way 1.5 kg on the nail. i thin, correct me if im wrong, that about 3.5 lbs. Ive used the lightest things possible.

10swg piano wire UC
Mini throttle servo
4oz fuel tank
Carbon pushrod for the elevator
Closed loop (pull-pull) on the rudder
NO tail skid
And if any covering gets punctured. replace it with lighter covering.

Yes, I do know that lighter flys better. but I am lazy. I bought the plane used.

I am running a TT46pro, w/ moosecan. NiMh 720 MH 6volt batt. 8oz tank. stock landing gear, and wheels. I am running 5 standard JR 517 BB servos. Stock motor mount.

I got this plane used, it already had the mount tapped for a OS46. So I just bolted my TT46 in. weight is not @ 4lbs dead even. No extra weight added to get it to balance. CG is perfect, I built me a little tray over the back servos, to get my CG right. It flys great, just a little heavy. Likes to tip stall.

If I do me another one. i would definately go with a my OS32SX. Or even a 46 LA. There is a guy at my field that has one w/ a stock 46LA and hovers great. If I went with same setup exept for motor:
swap to my OS32SX I could save 3oz. but if I wanted to do a little work. I would do this:
Swap throttle servo to a micro save another 1-oz.
Swap rudder to a hitec 225. Save another 1/2 ounce.
Get rid of switch save another 1/4 oz.
Swap out 8oz tank to a 4oz tank, save a little bit more.(don't need a 8oz tank on a .32, you could fly for over 20mins on a 8oz.
grind motor mounts down. save some more.
since I don't need to battery at the back on top of servos, because I don't need the tail weight, move battery under tank. then take out platform made, save maybe another oz.

With a little work, this plane could come it at 3.5lbs give or take a couple of oz. A OS32SX with stock muff/w baffle removed will hover a 4lb airplane, and pull it good. But if you can get the weight down to 3.5-3.75lbs. Pull out would be alot better.

Last year, I flew my OS32SX on a 4lb menace and it would pull out of a hover with ease. I now have it on a new menace that weights 3.5lbs and it shoots out like a rocket.

Ok, thanks for the info! I flew my Magic last year with an OS 46FX and it flew fine. I just flew it today with a Webra 32 and I like it better with the 32 versus the 46. Both setups using a mousse can. I changed a couple of other things to save weight and I'm about 1/2 pound lighter now than I was last year.
