In a word:
WOW

It almost flies without your thumbs on the sticks. I just have to barely touch my elevator to keep it level inverted. And you'll never find a plane that lands as easy as the Laser 3D.

getting one on friday

will an irvine .46 be good enough for this plane?
was thinking of a thunder tiger .46 and i dont want to pay double the price for an os .46fx when the TT and irvine are sort of closely matched to the os.

An Irvine .46 will fly the plane around fine. YOu will be able to do flat spins, Harrier rolls, and other non vert. manuvers. IMO ( I have two of these and I own an irvine) the Irvine will hover the plane put pull out will be weak. I would seriously consider putting a tuned pipe on your irvine and then you should be ok. I put a pipe on my Irvine and it helped it out a bunch. The header was around $25 and I made my own chamber out of a moose can.
I have also owned several TT's. My personal preferance is the TT. While the Irvine is two oz's lighter producing all but .03 h.p. that the TT produces, I have found the TT to be a little more user friendly when it comes to break in and tuning. BEsides you could use the extra two oz's up front to balance the plane.
And please pull up all the past threads on the laser3d and notice the modifications needed around the tail area. It will save you a lot of headache in the long run.

Or check out the Magnum .52 for $100. I'm gonna get one for my Laser. Currently running a .46 FX and it has better then a 1:1 power-weight ratio. But I want a lot more then the current ratio I'm getting.
I may try a mouse can on my FX before buying a Magnum... Worth a shot I suppose.

A great plane, if a little heavy.... be careful you do not underpower it... I wonder if a 46 will put up with the abuse of operating at 80% power most of the time ?

Perhaps an Irvine 53 rather than the 46? every little helps.

Well, an 53 is only a tenner more than the 46.

I personally would go with a west 50t1 and throttle pipe. AMAZING power. my flip is heavy (2.5kg) and it hoves is a few clicks below mid stick :p

No,if i were you id get a west 50t1. i know there 160 odd quid, but there well worth it. Power to weight is not an issue with any plane when this engine is instaled.

O'yeh, that includes a very high quality throttle pipe. I have a 13x4w prop spinning at 13'000rpm

An irvine 53 will swing a 12.25x3.75 at around 11'000rpm

If going OS, you really need the 50 SX. But they are something like £150. And then you really need to change the silencer as the standard one really restricts it. So that is then £180 at least. By the time you get there, you may as well buy a Saito 72 or YS 63 and be done with it.

Just engines are doing the Irvine 53 for only £80, so no comparison really.

Or speak to Archie at Island Hobbies. They can do the Irvine 53 with a throttle pipe for £105, or the West 50 T1 with pipe for £141, though these prices exclude VAT.

Or if you want really cheap, get an MDS 58. I haven't seen any with the new carbs, so no idea if they are any more reliable. You can get one of these for £45.

I wasn't sure how cheap he wanted! Wouldn't touch them myself.

My choice would be one of the 4strokes, but then I gave up trying to save money in this hobby ages ago :D

If it had to be 2 stroke then it would be the West.

ok looks like im going for an irvine 53 just for the extra power.

will this engine run ok on wildcat 15%? and what tuned pipe could i get for it?
Just as well the laser has a cowl that covers the engine because i hate the colour of the irvine engines

also change of plans. Im getting the plane tomorrow. cant wait. What is the best sort of surface to build on? I have a hardwood table in my garage that i use for all my hobbying needs but do i need something that pins will be able to go into. Just out of curiosity what do you need pins for when building planes? My LHS said i needed t-pins to build the plane but didn't explain what you do with them.

Is this your first kit (as opposed to ARTF)? Or is it your first rc plane? If the second, the Laser 3D is not suitable to learn to fly on.

If your first kit, perhaps you should ask in the Kit Building forum for more advice.

As for your questions:

As far as I know, Irvines are designed to run on low nitro fuel (0 - 5%) so splashing out on 15% is unnecessary.

As for pipe, best for this would be the throttle pipe, though you shouldn't need one. This then gets you back to Archie and Island hobbies as they have the deal with the pipe, though Just Engine sell them as well and may be able to do something for you. Weston UK will sell them separately too (but not the Irvines).

As long as the hard wood table is flat, that should be fine for most of the work. Laser models are supposed to be very well designed and cut, so you should not need to do much work in assembling it.

The Tpins are for things like the tail plane and fin, as you usually build these flat on the board over the plan before putting in the plane. Also the wing may need the pins to ensure that the ribs are in the right place as you build it.

You also need something to stick the pins in. I use cork boards which I got from B+Q. I think they were floor tiles.
