"I can't seem to figure out how someone could miss the sentence directly below the link to the DV manual. You would almost need to run your pointer over the statement that says stab mod not needed on any kits built after 12/05. "

FYI, the sentence you're refering to was added at some point in time. It was not there since the link was first created.

Here is a possible solution to make the plane flyable: It takes a little work, but may be less work than cutting up the stab.

Assuming the stab is glued in place permanently, you can do the same mod to the lower wing anti rotation pin hole. plug the existing hole & add a thin 1/8 lite ply backing and drill a new hole. It may not be 1/8" lower, you'll have to figure out the number of degrees the stab was changed and figure out the new wing pin location from that.
Then swap the front taller cabane strut with the shorter rear cabane strut to lower the top wing's incidence, may have to shim as needed.

Finally add a washer or two under the top mounting bolts of the engine for some down thrust.

This should effectively revert things back to normal. Only thing is that the fuse will be at a different angle when flying straight and level.

Yes, I know gluing the stabs on was not in the manual and was a deviation. I just want to help niceflattop get the plane flying. It is definitely worthwhile to fix it up and do that Knife Edge pass at eye level!!

I am not sure exactly when it was added, but I do know it has been there at least six months.

Let me set the record straight. First, I read every piece of info on this plane that I could. Even this thread. As I recall pre-pages 24 and before there was no mention of the mod. Secondly, when you read the manual download page off Chip's web site its not clear if the mod comment is for the 300 or the dv. So let me just say I'M SORRY FOR MISSING IT! My point of making a comment on this page is to help others not make the same mistake I made and to know that if they do Chip will not cover it. As for Chip, he has been very helpful but like any web company he must make sure that any down loads must be accurate. (can you imagine). The download manual was not! I am one of probably hundred people who have either made the mistake of completing the mod or have been confused and had to call Chip to clarify. After all the plane is an ARF not a kit, people expect to have items like this worked out prior to production. Yes, I did make it more difficult to repair once I glued the stab. Can any one on this site tell me that they have never made any modification to any of their planes during the building process? Thanks to you who were supportive in trying to help me fix the problem instead if being worthlessly critical.

niceflattop,
Not trying to be critical, I was just curious about how it could be missed. However, I could not say that I have never missed important info. You are correct, the correction should have been in the manual section on the stab. If there is some way for you to heat up the epoxy you may be able to loosen it enough. You may end up needing to recover the tail section but it won't be a complete loss.

First of all I do want you to know that I feel for this problem. Its a rotten situation. My only point is that it is not Chips fault and you come across as though Chip is responsible for your mistake. As far as Ive seen you are one of 2 ppl that have done this (thats all that has posted this problem) and are the only one that epoxied it to the fuse ( not that its dumb to do that) its just hard now to fix it. Bottom line is where you SEEM to be putting the blame is off and it is in no way Chips responsibility to eat the cost of your error.
As far as fixing it some ppl here might have good ideas. Getting it away from the fuse is the problem, especialy trying to save the hor. stab. Maybe hiring a surgeon would help ;) anyway good luck and we all wish you well and hours of fun flying.

NICEFLATTOP
sorry to hear about your trouble,i have a horz. stab and elev. for your dv the only problem is that i epoxy the stab on also, i had trouble with my first dv stab. getting lose and was getting up and down play, the anti rotaion pin hole in stab was getting egg shape. if you think you can use the tail section i will box it up and you pay the shipping thats all i want for it ,but it is epoxy to the fuse, don't know if this helps in any way, just a shot.

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

I take that back....There are now 3 confirmed cases of this. Nice of you to offer your hor. stab. see? things will work out these guys are great and thats why its good to read the forums . good luck.

Can anyone tell me if I should be crossing my rudder pull pull cables? I have them crossed but they are very close to each other. It did not look like they would clear the cutouts with them straight back.

i used swivel ball links with one on top the other on the bottom of servo arm and cross them that way it gives enough clearance so they don't rub.

I Have a question about weight on the DV i have got my DV second Gen built with smoke and everything and its coming in at 20LBS is that too heavy for the da50 or would that just make the vertical a little bit less than it should be?

adrian-RCU 10-02-2006 06:11 AM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

hey bro - 20 lbs is steep - the da will fly it well but this plane flies best around 16-17lbs max - i am building no 2 and will get it to around 16lbs with carbon tubes /landing gear and li pos.

its remains one of the very best 3d bipes and can be flown so hard you wont believe.

Maudib 10-02-2006 08:42 AM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

Yes 20 lbs is too heavy for 3D on a DA50, but would sportfly O.K. I've flown decent 3D up to about 18 lbs on the DA50. After that limited vertical...

Also on the DV at 20 lbs the wingloading is going to be high too. Faster on approach and perhaps not as stable.

Best thing to do if it's already together... is fly it. See what you think...

I agree with Adrian, this plane is simply a ball to fly 3D when kept lite as possible. I too have a second one I want to strip, lighten and customize for as light as I can get... even though my 17 lb stock Gen1 is simpoly superb monster...

i have 1st generation with 3w 60 and at 18 lbs this plane is so solid. it is the best harrier plane i have owned. i just recoverd the plane and put its first flights on this weekend. way cool.:D:D

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

hey guy's
has anyone had trouble getting the DV to do a inverted flatspin, when doing a blender then trying to go into a inverted flatspin, mine will either go into a knife edge spin, or a water falls i think thats what it is called it does forward flips, all control surfaces are at full deflection maybe to much? does great uprite flatspins.

Maudib 10-02-2006 06:56 PM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

SOunds like you worked out your stab issues... great!

Try dropping out the ailerons pretty quickly when you get the spin started. It's a little touchy to grab the flatspin as it will do just what you describe. It is that the surfaces all are a little too much together.

It's there and when you find the sweet spot it'll spin pretty nicely... I do notice about every 2-3 it will "wallow" one around and do 2-3 more nice spins, wallow, etc...

closetguy 10-02-2006 07:31 PM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

THANKS MAUDIB
i knew i was putting in to much of something just could not figure out what, your right about the wallow i had it doing that also but just not in a flat spin. thanks again i'll try laying off the ailerons. i want to see you get yours down to 16 lbs.
ENJOY!

Maudib 10-02-2006 07:35 PM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

Me too... :)

With lightening the fuse a little, CF wingtubes & gear, CF spinner, light but dense foam tires, judicious hardware selection, etc... I really think I can make it.

acrobatnut 10-02-2006 07:51 PM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

I would love to get mine down to 17.5 pounds just not sure where to trim the weight from. I used the alum tubes that came with it. i had to add 4 3/32 lite ply floors to mount everything on. im using duralite 4000 mah batteries on rec and 2000 mah on ign and a 1460 nimh for the sullivan skywriter smoke pump ,standard landing gear. do yall think i would lose about 2.5 pounds with getting carbon fiber landing gear and tubes??where else you think i could trim weight from besides taking out smoke system i have a vision 3d also and with same smoke system and engine and all setup it came in at 17.5 and fly like a champ has unlimted vertial so if i can get this DV down to that weight it would be great

Maudib 10-03-2006 10:02 AM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

Smoke system is the extra weight... the gear & tubes don't save but 6-8 oz total.

To get the lowest weight you have to build minimal... single receiver pack, etc...

acrobatnut 10-03-2006 06:05 PM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

thanks for the input maudib ill see what the smoke system weighs out of the plane and see if it get down to at least 18 lbs i'am running a single rec and battery, single battery for ign.thanks again for the input:)

Maxxgs
just buy it you will love the way it flies,i will bet that you can read this entire thread and not find any one that does not like the way it flies,i got one that i fly and anothere that is still in the box, cheif has the da and plane for under 1,000 or the plane for under 400.00,you will not find a better 3d bipe out there and for a plane this size and price it is a bargin, just don't put a lot of toys on the inside and keep the weight down,or just put a bigger engine in it and have more fun.
ENJOY!

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

Question regarding ailerons & servos-would Hitec 5955TG(400+oz@6v)be enough to use only 1 servo for each side? I would make a CF/titanium pushrod to connect the upper & lower ailerons(like on the Goldberg Ultimate)and add hard points if needed. Just looking for ways to save some $$ plus less complicated wiring(perhaps less likely to get interference too).

Maudib 12-14-2006 11:43 AM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

It would be plenty of torque... Heck a 5495 would probably be great too... I'm using 5625's with great results (4 of them)...

Have you heard of anyone doing this with good results?
