Woops, they are 333oz @ 6v,still good enough for each wing half?

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

I haven't heard of anyone doing it on the DV... btu a fella (I think Aerobob) did it with the GP Ultimate using 5945's I think....

With some consideration... I just might consider that for my own "lightened DV" project... it should save nearly 4 oz...

I'd install the servos in the lower wings and as you said use titanium.cf rods to connect the two.

333 oz in is HUGE for this plane... NP at all... the ailerons are VERY effective and as I mentioned... I might even use 5945's or 5985's in mine... a little lighter and at least 172 oz in at 6 volt...

The DV is looking better,$389,I only wonder if this is the last of them, might need spare parts someday?

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

Too late,I have it on order now. I will have to do the math now to see if 333oz is enough for 2 ail halves.

With any luck, the DV and my Maxair Velox will be here by Dec 22,who cares if it'll be a white Christmas!

:)Mixmaster...

Man...You are as bad as me. I'm building a biplane too. GP Ultimate with DA 50. Probably won't be able to fly it until March. But I'll enjoy the build.

thanks
Barry

I wanted the AW Extra but the savings was too good to pass up.($389 + hardware) I'm buying for next year now, dont have engines or flight packs yet. When I told the wife what I did,she took it well, maybe I should go for an engine or something?

Mixmaster,

I have four JR 8411 servos for my ailerons, and I think that is plenty for this plane. Also, I have a single JR 8611a servo for the rudder wit a SWB 3" offset arm for the P/P rudder cables.

BR, Mark

What I'm thinking of doing is using only 2 Hitec HS5955TG(333oz@6V)for each wing half by connecting upper&lower ailerons,no one else has posted that this has worked, waiting to see if so.

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

Don't think anyone has tried this as far as I know... but again... it would work very well as long as you made ample mods for the connecting horns and kept the linkage tight and slop free...

MIXMASTER 12-15-2006 01:31 PM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

I dont have the plane yet, but if there is hardwood all the way thru where the horns go,it should be easy to do. A friend has the Vision, & I think his horns are just screwed into the blocks. If it can be done, it will save me $200 for servos and make the radio installation easier plus less battery drain. As long as the servo can handle the area of 2 ailerons, there is a formula out there that calculates torque needed for a given area, both span & chord are in the formula,I'll see if I can find it on the web again.

I don't think it's solid underneath the servo plates (1/8" ply I believe). That's why the screws supplied are so short. The cutting of the covering and CA'ing the horn helps as well.

To do what you want, you'll have to open the area up, block it in and devise some method of protruding out the rear of the surface... on all 4 ailerons.

I agree... it'll be less money, lighter and if done right... just as efficient.

Mixmaster
the way i have done it in the past but never on a 30% yet,was to cut a slot at the trailing edge of the aileron the width of a peice of carbon fiber flat stock around 3/16 and maybe long enough to glue in at lease 3/4 into the aileron and enough left over to fasten your linkage to it has work great, never broke yet and no binding and both surfaces move the same.
ENJOY!

I'm going to be able to finish the DV sooner than expected,I sold an old Fender Telecaster guitar(35 yrs old) for $2K. A big package has just arrived at home,oh boy oh boy,I'll be coming back to this thread a lot & soon!

MIXMASTER 12-26-2006 10:05 AM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

It was the Velox, but next day a bigger package arrived-my DV is here! Its a Merry Christmas! I opened it up and inspected everything, very nice and huge! The covering job is the best(hope the China Coat II holds on!)It looks like going over the seems wont be needed,a few spots will need some gas venting holes & heat though. The cowl has a ding with a paint chip right on top corner,I might just put a decal over it & forget it,after 50 flights, none of them look new anymore and its not structural. Over all, everything is fairly straight & in order,I thought the fire wall was pre-drilled for DA 50? Mine wasnt, but I did not get the combo, maybe thats why.
It looks well built & strong, access behind the firewall looks tough,no way to get in there unless I open up the bottom some, maybe a lightening hole will help.

I think the ones predrilled and with standoffs have been all sold and just a few left undrilled and no standoffs... Did you get the standoffs? If not you'll need to get them with your engine...

I think there's pics of earlier of the hatch I made to get inside the nose... I cut out two "lightening holes" and then made another plate to go over it all... or you can use covering over the bays... My ignition/batttery were installed inside the nose...

If not here:

MIXMASTER 12-26-2006 11:27 AM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

Thank you for the pics, the cutouts you made will make access easy,I didnt get standoffs, could I get by with 3" standoffs and no ply rings? I see you used ply + standoffs, what length standoffs? Also,is that the DA muffler(only one tube)?,if so, it looks like the Slimline wraparound is out of the question, doesnt look like there is room for it.

Maudib 12-26-2006 01:03 PM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

The standoffs suggested are 1.25"... I used another 1/2" ply rings to get to 1.75" (worked well for me)

But 3" will be too long for sure...

Yes I used the stock DA muffler... seems to me some have used the slimline but it too requires some relief from the firewall and a good deal of cowl cutting...

Maudib 12-26-2006 01:18 PM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

See this thread for a pic of the slimline install... it CAN be done...

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_3844087/tm.htm

It was from the original manual but some extensive work I guess....

The stock muffler is lighter though and I like it!

MIXMASTER 12-27-2006 09:28 AM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

The stock muffler only has 1 tube? As long as it runs good,I'll go with the stock.

Yep just one...

It's adequately quiet for a mufler of it's type, provide good power for the engine and is the lightest option. At 5.3 oz the stack can be cut shorter as well... reducing the weight by about an oz or so...

Did yours come with a DA-50 mounting template or was it precut? If not here's the one I originally used for mine...

When you print it... in the prnting box, select NONE, under page scaling... if it seems a smidge offsize... align to the TOP of the firewall.

This has the slight cant of the engine to minimize cutout of the muffler... (see other pics of cowl installed)

MIXMASTER 12-27-2006 10:05 AM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

I haven't opened the bags yet so I dont know about the template,(I havent downloaded the manual yet). It is definately not pre-drilled for anything. What does the slight rotation of the mounts do for you?

Maudib 12-27-2006 10:11 AM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

Look at the first cowl pic and you'll see that the engine cylinder pops out the side a bit as does the muffler

If you mount the engine vertical, you won't need to cut anything for the engine... but a MUCH bigger cutout for the muffler...

MIXMASTER 12-27-2006 12:16 PM

RE: Its Here!! Double Vision

I see, either way there's a lot of cutting, guess it looks better with some kind of "balance" to it. My friends Vision is hacked for his DA50,dont know why he needed to do that. I have to order the Da50 & 5955 next, I read where they can take up to 7.2V which yields 416oz. torque,I doubt the rcv. could take that voltage,I would have to isolate a battery pack just for the 5955's with a common ground, wonder if that;'s ever been done before?
