Seems like the Saito 100 is the engine for this bird - I was able to talk a buddy out of one for a fair price...once I get the garage cleaned up I'll start building her.

Submike RE: U-Can-Do 46

You will love this plane with a Saito 100. CG at 6 inches. I don't know about the prop. The gear sucks, I use Dubro plastic gear, and I don't bother with the wheel pants on a grass field. I also use a Sullivan tail wheel bracket. Nothing better.

Enjoy.

RE: U Can Do 3D

Well Fred,
I guess I owe you a laugh. I was looking over the pages on the U Can Do as to prop size; That's right, it's July and I haven't even gotten him finished yet. In all fairness, I am nursing a back injury which is affecting me as much psychologically as much as the physical aspect. He was in the box forever but the pieces are now on my bench, a step forward. I did want to say thank you for your responses to my earlier queries, I can't believe the time just ran by so fast. Is the ship in your avatar photo an Aurora?

RE: U Can Do 3D

Roary m

You have sharp eyes to spot the Aurora in the Avatar. YEP, this was my favorite plane in the early 90s, and I still have it. I flew this and a Brushfire in competition.
The U-Can-Do 46 will never be a pattern plane and the Aurora will never be a 3D plane. At least not when I am flying it.
I know all about bad backs. The U-Can-Do is the plane for you. I have three. Two with an OS 91 4C pumper and one with a
OS 50 AX. I use the 91s for float flying as well as at the field. I don't have much time on the 2c engine yet. I might replace it with and OS 70 4c.
I find I can't enjoy electrics. I keep waiting for the battery to sag. If you don't have extra batteries, like a bushel of them, you are done in 8 minutes. At least with glow, thrust is the same from beginning to end and you can fly all day on a half gallon of fuel.

Regards, FRED

RE: U Can Do 3D

The UCD .60 is OK as "transitional" plane to full out 3-D. I had 4-5 of them, got them to do almost every 3-d stunt(bad with rolling harriers though)with mixing in spoilerons, fuel tank over CG and a Cline unit. I had OS 1.08 and Moki 1.35 in the .60s, the 1.08 was best, a 1.20OS 2-stroke would be the best IMO. I eventually realized that Great Planes was not going to "Upgrade"(fix) the UCD problems, LG mount too weak for one. I've moved on to 30% gassers, then 33% & 35% gassers, what a difference, great flyers with no mixing, very little trim needed. Finding a .60 size plane that really does all out 3-d is tougher now, Flinton made some really good ones and I had a Fusion that was the best glow 3-d IMO. It ws only around 7lbs w/OS 1.20.
Hey Barry, there is a 35% plane that is capable of rising flat spin-EG MX-2, I saw one do it at my field, the pilot had only been flying for around 2yrs at that point.

RE: U Can Do 3D

Fred,
That's precisely why I don't fly electric either. I have flown friends planes and somewhere in the flight, I am mentally readusting the throttle setting, as you said because the juice box is going dry. I do have an appreciation for electrics in general, but I have flown forever on glow; it's just me. I do have a pumped OS 91 I could stick on the UCANDO; you mentioned this powerplant earlier. Will think about it.

RE: U Can Do 3D

Hello, Roary m

I put 8 flights on my U-Can-Do 46 today with an OS 50 AX mounted inverted, and had a great time. The engine uisn't totally broken in yet, but performed well. I used a 12-4 APC prop and will play with other props later.
Yes, I fly the Ucan with an OS 91 pumper which I need with floats. I take the floats off and fly on grass also. If you get in trouble trying to hover, the 91 will pull you straight up. I use 15% cool power.
I will be trying to do the rising inverted flat spin. I will probably wet myself if I ever get it done. I know I won't do it with the 50AX

BTW, I like the float idea, am considering it.

Maidened my UcanDo 3d 60 size to day nice flying air plane. I"m using a DL 20 for power and it was brand new just 3 5 minute runs. Was getting 8400rpm with a apc 16/8 with a real rich mixture setting lots of power and every thing fits in the cowel
. One happy camper

looks like the engine fits the plane real nice. I'm very interested in hearing some more flight reports and 3D abilities of the plane with this engine.
Would also love to see a pic after the cowl is put in place.

the u can do 3d is such a fun plane. ive had mine for a while and i love it. i like it more than any of my other planes.

RE: U Can Do 3D

:)I agree. I've kinda moved on into larger gas stuff...but the UCDs are where I cut my 3D teeth. And the fun factor is amazing with these planes. I've had (4) of the 46 size and (3) of the 60 size and still currently have one 60 size that I use in the spring or other times when I haven't flown in a while to get the thumbs working again. I also had the Giant UCD which was fun too. Great planes! One of only a very very few that will do a inverted rising flat spin. Truly amaizing. I just love the UCDs.
Thanks
Barry

Here are picks with the cowl on plane. It will hover at less than 1/2 throttle but that’s the limit of my 3d skills. It will do the basic and sportsman’s IMAC routine with ease, and pretty good precision

what a fun plane at the 6 1/4" balance point.
