RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
Mine are still in the bag too. Been flying this ship for 6 months now. Your guess is as good as mine!

RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
I just recieved my Wildcard and decided to order a OS 46 AX engine which is better than the FX and has 1.65 BHP :D cant wait to recieve it and stick it in it's the best 46 i have found anywhere for power....

RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
Im finaly putting mine together,i have to fix a rib on the right wing as it is broken, installed the motor tonight and have found a problem with the standard mount with a 46fx..I cant put the motor any farther forward than 108mm from the firewall and the manual says it should be 115mm.Will the 7mm diference be a problem? Also i cant tighten the screw under the needle valve as its in the way.How are you guys setting up the throtle linkage? As ill have to put some fairly big bends in it to clear the motor mount and get the right travel, are you all doing this or using some other brand of mount?
|
RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
I used the stock mount with the 46FX. Throw away the clamps that come with the motor mount. Move the engine as far aft as you can. Then drill and tap the mount. Don't use the predrilled hole for the throttle. I plugged the stock hole location and drilled a new hole directly behind the throttle lever, then used goldenrod. Just be careful not to drill into anything inside the fuselage.
Flys great. |

Well i went with the clamps and it turns out i had the throtle pushrod in the wrong hole(shrugs shoulders).Im ready for the maiden but as time came to go to the feild the wind picked up and it is now to windy, and the forcast was for light wind this weekend.Hopefully tomorrow will bring beter conditions for its first flight.
Ive added some white strips to the bottom of the wing to be able to see which side is up and the CoG is about 125mm from the leading edge.Is that to far back for a first flight as mine is abit tail heavy hence the pilot spinner and a 1400mh pack behind the tank? One more question, where do you set the ailerons up to be level with? I have mine level with the straight bit of the wing tip(center of the wing),or should it be level with the bottom of the wing |
RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
Got to fly it today and i must say what a hoot..:D
After about 1 hour fidling at the field to get the 46 to run right after being in a box for 6 months, and the throtle linkage coming undone it was time to put her up. Well with about 1/2 throtle and a 12.25x3.75 prop she was air borne and only needed 3 clicks of right aileron and it flew like a kite.. Ive only ever had extras after coming off my trainer and it was so much fun flying somthing that floats around the sky and not fall like a brick when the power is pulled back. The wind picked up at around lunch time and i could get it to just hang there in the sky and float backwards.(lots of fun) I can't 3D but with this plane i was doing harrier landings and hovering it(not vertical) but a high alfa and it put the bigest smile on my face.I even had landing that was into the wind and it just hung there from about 20meters and i brought it straight down for the softest landing that many ppl at the feild said "when did you get the chopper" LOVE IT.. Cant wait for next weekend to come now for its next flight.:D PS the white strips make it much eazyer to see. |
RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
Hi all,
Is there any video of the Funstar that anyone knows about? Thanks Langfire |
RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
Yea, the Funstar was on my short list when I decided on the Magic 3D. I do like the looks of the Funstar and the more central/low wing, symetric wing. Tower has them for $99, hmm.....
|
RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
A fellow flyer has had 2 magic's, i have had a go of 1 and must say it is much better at the 3D stuff than the Funstar is..Much lighter..
My Funstar is no more, from a low hover mistake..I got to take the wing home atleast.. :) |
RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
thinking of buying a fun star, someone got a brandnew one for $120 in box, ill put my 46fx on it
does anyone know the max speed it will handle. thanks. |
RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
I'm not sure what speed it can handle but all I can say , this plane is not meant to be a pylon racer and if you are about to fly it faster make sure you get better quality push rods (like carbor fiber) to at least half prevent the flutter. Other than that it's a great plane that will do almost anything you can think of and that includes KE as well...... whereus 3DMagic can't. Also apart from top quality flyers I have never seen anybody torque roll this thing. Phoenix Funstar ? .....no problem.

RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
i have a superstar trainer.would the funstar 3d be a good 2nd airplane
|
RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
I have a new irvine Wildcard....that plane looks great in the ground...i haven't flyed it yet...I will put a TT Pro46 motor next week, and fly him in two weeks...pro46 with 11/6 props...looks just great...
|
RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
I'd reconsider your prop selection, Jorge.
If you're using a TT Pro 46 I'd suggest a 12x4 - or preferably a 12.25x3.75 prop. The 11x6 is too fast and not enough thrust. |
RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
Been looking around for a 3D aircraft and took some time reading through this thread.
I am interested to know how this funstar preforms knife edge ? A few conflicting reports, anyone got the answer. As far as the other 3 d stuff harriers, blenders, can these be preformed with this model, I appreciate the pilot skill is pretty important too, but is the model capable in the first place. Thanks for the help |
RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
Everything can be done with this plane, but you have to double bevel the elevators for harriers and elevators. You can knife edge, but it rolls and pitches pretty hard. May be pretty hard to get a knife edge loop. Besides this it will do anyhting you throw at it. It does some of the best walls and parachutes I have seen.

RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
how will a .40 la fly it
|
RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
it will not fly with 40 la.. not recommended.

RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
Does anyone know if there's anyplace in the USA that sells the full line of Phoenix planes? Tower is moving up buy adding the Decathalon to their line but they don't have some of the others. I have the Strega and LOVE it. The Fun Star is next in line for purchase. I'm wanting the war birds. It looks like they have a Spitfire and a Corsair in their line. The Boomerang high wing is a cool looking plane too, not offered the the USA of course.

RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
I am thinking on buying this plane. Is a Thunder Tiger GP61 engine too much power for that?
|
RE: Phoenix Models Fun Star 40-3D
I accidentally maidened my Funstar today in strong & gusty winds blowing around in different directions. I was just going to try some taxiing practice (famous last words) and break in the engine some more (rich setting, high idle). The plane hit a bump going into a strong gust of headwind and was suddenly airborne and did not want to come back down. I flew one small circuit and landed with no problems. The plane flew straight and stable and did not even seem to notice the ugly wind conditions. I was very impressed. :D Or very lucky.
