Bad design for sure!

Mine did exactly what your talking about. I talked to some people here on RCU and they said that the Cline regulator is the fix.
I have installed it and ran the motor at home. It started really easy.
I am going to be flying it tomorrow for the first time with the regulator on it. I'll report back what I find.

A buddy of mine just got a UCD / Saito 1.00 and just installed the Cline right off the bat. We will be flying his for the first time tomorrow as well.

And, you liked it so much you sold the motor out of it.

Your getting to be as bad as Pugs.

I bought it from a friend who smashed it so I bought it and repaired it. The fuse was smashed and 9 of 12 wing ribs were broke. :D

I'll sell it if you wanna buy it! I had a Saito 120 in the nose and it was a little too heavy.

It wasn't that fun with that heavy ass 120 in the nose... besides I got an Extra to finish up before June. :D

<shrug> 60 bux for the Cline, and the ability to move the fuel tank wherever you want, get a consistent run for the entire flight regardless of fuel quantity or aircraft attitude. I though it was worth it, and it worked as advertised. IMO, the Cline should come with the Saito.

Wardog,

Where are you in our fair state?

I side-mounted my YS 91, out of concern for possible cooling problems this summer. It looks okay; definitely not that "Camaro" look...<G>

I'll post a pic when I get home tomorrow if you're interested.

Good one, Ryan. I agree...<BFG>

There are five of these airplanes at my club. One has a Saito 100 inverted, and I don't recall him having any flooding trouble. But, I've only seen him fly it once.

TheEdge 04-11-2003 01:14 PM

Flooding ?

What flooding?

Mine is stock, located invereted. No problems what so ever

I guess for once I got lucky

TheEdge,

You using the Saito 1.00?

The problem is on starting. Too much fuel runs into the carb and when you try and start it the motor has a hard time turning over because of the excess fuel. Its not flooding after its running.
I was turning the plane over and starting it with the motor upright but that was a huge PITA. Once it was running it ran perfect though.
My trouble was all related to starting the motor.

TheEdge 04-11-2003 01:25 PM

Yes sir,

Saito 100 inverted. It starts great but I had one heck of a time getting the idle right and eliminating dead sticks on low idle approach.
I think I have it now.

One other thing I did which improved the idle was to take out the OS "F" plug and put in a #8

The cline is a sure fire way to fix the problem. It is unfortunate that it cost $60. It's also unfortunate that Great Planes designed the UCD that way. Once you start flying the plane though you kind of overlook some of the initial irratants :D

Wayne if I remember correctly it's about 2 1/4 turns out. Where is yours?

close to 3 turns out..

Cline regulator

I had the same problem with an OS 91 in my U-Can-Do except mine would usually start (by hand) but would not run at full throttle until tank was about half empty. I installed a cline regulator and it now runs at all throttle settings but I have to start it with an electric starter. It will not draw fuel through the regulator by choking the engine so I have to put a starter on it. Go figure. Well I guess that is better than the flooding problem.

Specman: I have the same problem with the Saito on the first cold start of the day. I've found that "priming" the engine by squirting fuel either down the carb, or through the needle valve (when cowled) solves the problem.

OBTW, with the Cline, my high speed needle sits right at 3 turns out.

Are you guys pumping up the tank at the end of the filling session? The cline MUST have some starting pressure in the tank, or choking the engine will not draw any fuel. The cline folks told me on the phone to pump up the tank two or three more pump turns (manual pump) after the fuel squirts out the muffler pressure tap and the tap has been plugged. In other words, pump in the fuel, wait till it squirts out the muffler pressure tap, plug the tap, and then pump in about three more turns of fuel. Squeeze fuel line so it wont squirt out (unless you have a fueling valve), then plug the fuel inlet. After doing this for the first time, I choked the carb like normal, turned the engine over three times (I thought I would have to choke it that much) and it flooded the engine! I now just turn the engine over once, choked, and it starts every time.

I have a Cline that I bought several months back, haven't used it yet. I paid $50 for mine, thought that was kind of high for such a small device, now I see they are $60. They must be enjoying a nice profit margin! :D I guess it'll be worth it if it works as well as everyone is saying.

The cline seems to make the highend needle a little less sensitive. In fact, a quote from the Cline website states:

When adjusting the mixture, you will find that the needle will not be as sensitive as it was without the PCFS system installed. This is normal. You will find that the mixture will stay where you set it all through the run, from full to empty.
I think on average, the cline will make you turn the needle out maybe 1/2 to 1 turn from where you'd normally have it without the cline. No big deal.

I just checked mine and it was 2.5 turns out instead of 2.25
