RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Damn, Raid, let's go FISHING!
There is, somewhere, a video of a guy (can't recall the plane) dragging a plug across the water, trolling. Now THERE'S an idea. Just look out for the Loch Ness monster. Ho, ho. You wouldn't want him to break his teeth on those expensive servos. |

ORIGINAL: Jack211 The .46 doesn't have that room. In the past I've used reversing splitters like the one in the photo but the elevators tended to drift out of alignment after the plane sat in the hot sun for awhile. Then I'd have to open the plane to adjust the splitter pot to realign the elevators. Now I just turn on the preset in the Futaba 9C transmitter for using two elevator servos. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
hey guys, im not sure about futaba but JR makes reversed servos, might check on futaba, maybe-----just maybe;)

ORIGINAL: gjeffers hey guys, im not sure about futaba but JR makes reversed servos, might check on futaba, maybe-----just maybe;) Oh, you guys................... You speak to my dreams! --a fully functional computerized radio. I started with a Futaba 6XEA (I bought another for a backup)--and I've grown out of it, them. I have 8 flyable planes, but the Futaba 6EXA only recalls 6, plus, with separate servos on the elevator, with a JR I'm told you can mix them with the ailerons. Wow, talk about rolls, huh? So what is recommended? My pal's dream is a JRxxxxx?--because all the competitors use them. And how many of my kids will I have to sell to get one? Jack (starting to count pennies now) |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
You can't reverse Futaba servos anymore.
Futaba web site says Futaba servos cannot be reversed because of the surface mount technology used. They sell the FUTM4150 SR-10 DUAL SERVO REVERSER. $34.99 at Tower Hobbies. Maybe that one is better than the cheaper one that I used, I don't really know. Get a 9C transmitter. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I beleive you can reverse the servo direction by swaping the pos neg wire on the servo motor, take the servo apart and rewire internally will reverse the direction the motor operates in, problem sorted!

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Jack... I now use an Airtronics RD 8000, and it does almost all that I want and has/is
a good radio.. Well I don't need to bend servo rods to those odd bends:-)... Just flip a switch, and it does have 10 model mem.... But I have been thinking of switching to JR.. I started looking at the XP 8103 and it looks like it would be all that I would need.. But then again if I do make the switch I think I'll get the XP 9303.... If you look around you can find it for a fair price.... It's hard to beat a radio that with just a flip of a switch you can do pretty much what you want and/or need.... |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
9C is the way to go. But I'm a futaba guy...never given me any problems. I have a 7c and does
have the P-Mix for the dual elevator but the trim does not work on the slave servo. I will change to a 9c soon to eliminate the servo reverser and for features I will need in the future like the Synthesized module. Got a question, I worked on the do yesterday and the backplate to the spinner was cracked so I need to replace it. Have had my eye on a 2" Tru Turn Aluminum Spinner. Will the APC props fit in these without carving like a plastic spinner requires? Thanks!!! |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
sdcranford. The true turn spinners have models specially made for the wide props. Go to their web site or the Tower site and scrool throuth the sizes. You will see. Sorry I do not know the part number. I have recently purchased one from Tower and it fits perfectly. Jim Tucker

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
patnjimtucker,
So the model for wide props will be fine for a 11.5x4 APC? Glad I asked before I spent $25. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
sdcranford... It should work on that prop... The (wide model) works great on the
APC 12.25x3.75... You should give that prop a try.... I think another "Do" is on the way.... More about it later... I cleaned up the saito all looks good except for a small dent in the intake pipe.. Tried to order one but they are on back order til 01/06... So I'll use it for now.. It's not that bad, just looks... well.... I still have not really turned the crankshalf... I'm not sure if the hole on the push rod cam cover let some dirt in there?? I think it's a vent hole? Anyway I wanted to look into that a bit more.. I have the rec. and servo boxed ready for a check up at Hitec.... And the sad part the "Do" is in the can... That did not sound right:-) |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
What motor are you running? I am running a S.T. .45 ABC engine. The 11.5x4 works well,
I tached the 11x4 and it was running around 16k RPM full throttle, and running rich too. Seemed too high so went to the 11.5. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
This is on my YS 63 and the OS 46fx.... That prop should do some good to
slow it down some verses the 11x5 |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
It was an 11x4 but I will order one with my spinner you recommended.
I'm sure it will slow it down a little bit more, I would go to my LHS but they dont carry many low pitch props. I need the spinner since i have an ugly black one on it since my red one broke. Thanks for all of the advice, I will try those recomendations. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
ORIGINAL: Jack211 Gj, the Futaba can "reverse" servo throws, but with both elevator servos on one line (#2 port), you reverse them both. here is an example of what i was talking about----- http://www.wholesaletrains.com/Detail.asp?ID=20015494 good luck!! |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hey gjeffers, I might have to fly up there sometime. Is the airport open? I can fly up there in about an 1.5 hours in a Bonanza.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
it sure is Beechtech, a 6000 ft runway, we have about 6 or so aircraft hangared here, just keep it between the lines of Chia Lake Naval Wepons Center and youll be ok[X(]
fly on up on a sunday and bring your plane and ill meet ya there, (as long as your not the FAA):D |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Gj, you don't think much of the FAA either. Did you see where they will take as much as "a year" to figure out what went wrong in Chicago, where a plane killed a 6 year old kid in a car?
A year? Your government dollar at work. They know today, betcha, but they'll keep spending our money. The weather didn't help, but from what I can glean of the report, the pilot set that bird down waaaay late on the runway. So they will conclude "pilot error." Even 10 year veterans of flying, like that pilot, can make mistakes. Maybe he didn't have fuel to go around, I don't know. But that jet can stop with engines reversed in a short distance; ice on the last half of the runway didn't help, for sure. That's what we need to know, what OTHER pilots need to know, the elements of disaster. I'm just happy I don't have a hundred plus folks in my birds. The mouse I put inside my canopies can neither write nor read, and he knows NOTHING about the FAA, but if he survives, I give him cheese and peanut butter at the end of the day.Neither the FAA nor PETA have bothered me yet. Well, maybe once. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Well, Yet another rotten day of flying or attempting to fly the Do yesterday. [&o] Good thing I beefed up the landing gear. [:-] The Saito 82 in it just won't stay running. It dead sticks in the air every time. [:o] I tried to check the tune on it but my tach didn't seem to me like it was working right. It kept showing anywhere from 9000 something rpm's up to 13,000 rpm's. It was bouncing around too much so I think I'll put some new batteries in it and see it that helps. It must be that it's just way out of tune with the colder weather and all. ARRRGGGGHHHHH........:(
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Rob, re: the 82, let me know what you conclude. I have an 82, too. My history with tachometers is they either work or they don't. I might suspect something wrong with the way the fuel is getting to the engine. 9000 to 13000 rpms ... big jump. Bubbles in the line? Pinholes? Vibrating tank?
Better luck today. Jack |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Jack, i put a mouse in the plane once and i had to polish out the scratches on my canopy not to mention the brown spots, and mannnnnn he was mad and i got a dirty look as he ran past me:D
as far as the FAA, well its just another government agency thats gotta get more money so they overplay everything anymore just to justify their job when like you said, they already know, but the news just said that the reverse thrusters didnt work and i know that the fog was down to 300 ft so i think that would just about do it for me[X(](oh!!! and the news dont lie either:)) Rob, that thing needs a lot more fuel in the cold so try giving it a big crank on the big knob, or check the tank, gotta be one of em[&:] i had to retune my 100 a whole turn on the edge(had one deadstick) but my tank was a half inch lower than the carb opposed to one inch higher in the 60 do but i knew it was the fuel cause it always ran good so i started it up, peaked the rpms and turned in the screw uptill it almost died and then turned out the screw untill i heard it drop a little and start smoking good and it runs great now, especially inverted:D |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Thanks Gary for the info. I've got a copy of a tune up guide for Saitos that I got off the web and was going to follow that to set it up but since the tach didn't seem to be working right I just gave up untill I got some new batteries. I can't hear the engine change well enough so I rely on the tach to set the top end.
As far as the investigation of the 737 crash, since I work for Boeing I have seen quite a few videos on crash investigations and it's quite extensive and takes a long time. Yes, they probably know what happened based on how it all went down but have to check every thing to make sure that everything that caused it is addressed. They will probably have an AOG team go down there and rebuild the plane there get after the investigation and get it flying again...........:D |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Sounds like fun. I will have to save my pennies, The airplane cost 76.00 an hour, so at least 3 hours is 230.00. Had a good weekend flying down here, I finally did a few knife edge spins. The Do with the 100 just keeps getting better.

I've got a copy of a tune up guide for Saitos that I got off the web .... Rob, is that Saito web site the one Brent Watkins put together @ http://saito-engines.info? I've used it, too. Gave me some confidence when I first started with 4 cycles. So far so good. Nice to know what props to use with which engines, too. Set up and needle tuning is finely detailed. I had an audience today for the Can Do .46. Three great flights, long. I found a group of fliers who know nothing about 3D, just like to fly their WWII models (all under .40 size) in circles and dives. I have hopes for a 14 year old who, I'm told, ( none of them flew, said it was too cold, 15 degrees), enjoys flying his bird over the field upside down--a beginning. LOL After they saw the Magic and the Can Do do their thing, they all wanted the new planes. The attraction to THEM is they have TWO perfect fields. One for summer, one for winter. Huge, open, along a quiet country road. I put a 13 x 8 prop on the OS .60 for the Can Do and suffered no flame-outs, as opposed to 2 out of 3 flights with flameouts with a 12 x 6 on the maiden flights last week. The OS likes the big prop and the cold. I've GOT to get a 13 x 5 for it, though. On order. Jack Flying cold slows NOTHING down. |
