how low can you go?;)

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
38, Great job! Keep it up on the sim and you'll be doing that on your real one soon. Gary flies that low on his.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Barry, I'm glad to hear you're getting MORE time in the air with higher nitro content. Now what I heard in the Saito forum.
The advantages of the velocity stack: 1) it cleans up the engine compartment, big time; 2) fuel, which goes into the carb not the firewall, gets USED; 3) both the LS and HS needles are leaned, so; 4) performance picks up; 5) it's a cheap fix ($6.75 plus a Bru-line filter--which I already had). J. |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Question? My UCD CG is 5 3/8". I have 20 clicks of up to fly level @ 1/2 throttle, and inverted flight natually requires an equal amount of down. Getting ready to put my engine back on. The plane is very difficult to KE. Seems to pull to canopy. Possibly because of up elevator trim that is loaded. Should I put a little up thrust on engine mount before putting engine back on. Will this allow me to trim elevator to level to help with KE pulling?
Barry fish scale? What do you hook it on? TailWheel? Pics? Never though of that. Doug:) |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
That's the final word on it-Fun. (and the Do can take your 3-D skills up a notch or 2)Fun +.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
20 clicks!!?? Sounds like its monster nose heavy, but that CG isn't bad.(5 3/8) Sounds like something is wrong.Up thrust will make it pull to canopy even more I suspect. Why aren't you trimming it at full throttle?
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
MIXMASTER Full throttle even with the 14 x 4w prop is really fast. Vertical is the only place i fly full thottle. Plane is nose heavy with a Saito 80 (around 22 oz. ) , same as Saito 100 I think. 22 clicks is about 1.5 degrees.

Thrust readings: I just take my trusty, super accurate, digital fish scale and hook it to the plane. Do not use bungy cords. (don't ask how I know this) I use a motor cycle tie down strap. I loop it under the elevators and over the fuse and bring the hooks together and hook them in the scale. One problem I had was you need to make certain the slack and weight is taken up and off the plane, or your readings will be off. I try to get it in a position, on concrete where I can loosly pull the plane backwards (works best with 2 people) That way I give a smooth steady pull until the plane moves backwards. At that point is where I read the thurst rating. Works very good, is easy to use, portable, fun, cheap, informative, competitive, creative, logical, smooth, uplifting, disappointing, clever, fast, and something everybody at the field wants you to do with their plane. Nice though because you can change a prob and instantly tell the change in thrust (surprising) or change fuel nitro content or make your buddy feel bad when he thinks he has 11 lbs of thrust and in reality it's only 9. Thanks Barry |

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I have a Sa 100 in my .46,CG is close to where yours is and I dont need that massive trim? I didnt like the thrust & speed with any 4 pitch prop on a Saito, even the wide blades. Seemed like the engine was over revving, hurting it and wasting that torque a 4st has. 6 pitch and APC works well. Do you have digital or manual trims?

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hi all:).... Just a note... I finally received the call from the Post Ofice 6 days
shy of 3 months... WoW.. That's speed!!! They said the checks in the mail including the next day mail I asked for:)))). The person that called me was the local person here, She said she just thought she wuld check again for me:))) Plus:))))))) She says, I'm not suppose to do this.... But I have a wing here that needs to be destroyed... What's the chances of you doing that for me:)))) While you know where I'm heading now.... Not much progress in "Do" #2..... But since I'm using the Saito 100, When ever I get r done I'll give the S 82 a spin..... |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
:)raideron...
That's great news. I hope the post office uses Fed Ex to ship you your check..... Thanks Barry |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
MIXMASTER Actually the 100 & 80 are almost the same weight. Massive trim is not exactly accurate. I use a JR radio with digital trims. Trimed for level flight the counterbalance (frontpart) of elevator is down about 1/16". As far as props go. I get a max rmp of 9500 and I richen it to around 9200, it seemed with a 14 x 6 that I couldn't get more than 8700 rpms. The engine is anything but new.
raideron Three months doesn't sound that bad for going 1/2 way around the world. Knock on wood, I have been real fortunate and not had any problems. I prefer UPS over USPS. Barry Cazier what did you do? Read a dictionary before that last post. Never heard anyone use so many descriptive words. Ha!Ha! I get the idea. Thanks! Doug |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I use a Futaba 9C w/digital trims as well, never had to hit the button 20 times though(not sure if thats what you mean)Anyway, sounds like you are just a tad nose heavy, I like to at least move CG to where I have elevators trimmed level w/stab.The CG range on the Do's is so wide because of the long tail moment.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Raideron, congratulations, at last!
I HAVE the Saito 1.0 in my Can Do .60. Flies tomorrow. I haven't that many hours on it, but it crapped out in both my P-51D and the Can Do 60. The carbureator is an inch BELOW the centerline of the fuel tank. I hear that's a no-no, though that 1.0 does suck a lot. Tell me how you have yours mounted. Is anyone else having problems with 4-cycle carbs mounted below the centerline of their fuel tank? Can Do or otherwise? Jack |

I hear you Barry:-)))) I'm not telling them anything:)).. Not sure why... Both of
the "Do's" wings are here:-))... But I have to destory one of them:)... Jack... I had the S-100 inverted in the 46... I did lower the tank somewhat.. But the tanks discharge was still about 1/2"+ above the carb. But she ran great.. I'm going to trim the firewall hole the same as I did, and lower the tank on the new "Do" And I'm sure the S-82 will run just fine..... Doug.... I guess..... Them horses do need watering and a few months rest during the trip... :)... Oh... I have a E.F. Yak/ UPS story too....:)... On another note.... My SPAD is running Great:-).... Only using about 35-40% of the throws.. and working with a few props.... But she's running GOOD!!!! I Think:-))) She look's fast:-)))))))... She's charging now for the am...... On another, nother note... My E.F. Yak parts came today..... I'm itching to get it up which will be first to fly...................... |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Raid, that SPAD is awesome. Where'd ya get the plans? Looks like a Sturdy Birdy fuse with ENORMOUS control surfaces.
Ah, and you have the most difficult question to answer: which of your beloved birds do you fly first? Every pilot envys a man with choices. Let us know what you choose. [And beware the revenge of the bird not chosen first. Those birds know jealousy.] Jack |

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Thanks, Rob. Club Saito folks say they have a Cline (60 bucks plus shipping) and an Iron Bay regulator (44 plus shipping) for my problem.
For that kind of money I'll remount the engine and tank. And, Rob, are you telling me that arrangement, with the loop, doesn't give you any trouble in flight? I could try that first. How far out of alignment is the tank/carb with your 82? I'd have to guess. Jack |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Jack, I don't have any troubles at all with mine. Not sure what you are saying about it in flight.
I would have to pull the cowl off to see exactly where it's at but looking at the pictures that I have of it, the carb seems to be lower than the fuel tank cap. I'm wondering if the kwik fill valve and the loop in the line are what is helping it out. I've heard though that the 60 is different than the 46 in respect to the tank location. Do you have a kwik fill valve on the plane? |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Hey Jack... The plans came from spadtothebone.com under classics, .25 size,
dog fighter.. I use a Mag 28, and made some small changes.. Their fun and require small throws, and loads of props... But I'm getting a bit better now.. A fellow club member gave anyone that wanted to get involved with our club's venture into .25 size combat/pylon racing all the material to build the plane, which the price of the coro is climbing fast.. after watching the combats, it looked like a lot of fun... So now I got one:)) It takes a bit to get use to it, But I now have mine trimmed, lowered throws and found the right props to "Get R Done"... This morning all said she was up with the fastest spads:))) No one to test it with, as the wind came on pretty early.... |
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
I have several inverted Saitos, 100 in a UCD and 150 in Yak, both have carb lower than tank. Both run well w/o a Cline. The only problem is fuel can siphon into the carb & flood it if you do not keep the carb all the way closed during fueling and dont open it until just before starting. Out of the box,the Sa's are usually set to rich and its hard to stop the flow until leaned out. I have to remember to shut the carb(throttle stop) before each re-fueling. A Cline does prevent this but its $$$ and makes the engine a little harder to adjust-high end is less sensitive to turns, flat response.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Well, after posting that I didn't have any troubles with mine, yesterday it was leaking like a bandit. I tried different things but just couldn't get it to stop. Finally I was taking the cowling off to check it out and found that the Dubro fueling was stuck. I got it unstuck and it worked great. Got some flight in on the U C Do after that.
|
RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?
Almost forgot,I never have to prime my inverted Saitos, priming usually ends up flooding it.
