RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

I put a bigger engine on it so I would have unlimited vertical, not for speed. Thats also why im changing props to a 13X4. The UCD's are not designed for speed...

Can i put a Towerhobbies 61 bb abc in here? will it be enough to hover? i used to hover my ultra stick 40 with this engine.
thanks

Hmm, You may want to compair that motor to the FX. Im not real familure with the TH 61, but I dont see why not...

There's a guy at my flying field that has that setup. The TH 60 is Plenty, though the pilot wasn't all that capable, it did fly pretty well. He has since crashed and rebuilt it a few times...

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

I've been flyin' my UCD46 on skis this winter here in Connecticut. My buddy and I were 3D flyin' last Saturday in heavy snowing conditions with no wind, 32 degrees, (was a warm day) 'bout a 1/4 mi. visibility, ...what a blast we had! During hovers, I noticed it needed a lot more throttle. I/we actually had snow/icing on all leading edges - even spinners. That stuff kills lift and adds weight...just like full scale. Between flights we had to use our car snow brushes to clean off the wings/tail. We had much fun.

It's a great day when you bring it home with the same amount of pieces you brought.

ORIGINAL: Dynodan

If you don't like the speed you shouldn't have put in a bigger engine than what it called for.

Engine size has nothing to do with speed, its all in the prop. 6 inch pitch prop is faster than 4 inch pitch prop at the same rpm.

Hay Dyno, who uses the reccommended engines anyway? I have a 91 FS on mine and love it totally, found the 61 to be lacking. Some people can't handle the power.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

With me, This is my first 3D plane, Im used to flying at mach 3 with my T-34. It took some getting used to, but I really wanted to learn how to 3D. The hardest part for me was not flying 3 ft off the deck inverted at full throttle. The first flight I put on it, I got really bad flutter on the elevator, so I had to learn the haard way.

what size battery should I use with the os 70 surpassII and hitec 605's all around,I was going with a 1500mah nicad.Too heavy?or go with a 1100nicd?
Anyone have a sugestion?

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Im using 600 MAH on mine. Ive got S3001's all around except the Rudder, witch is a high torque hitec servo, but I dont remember witch one. It seems to do fine, but I have a volt meter under my canope just incase. If your really that concered about it, 1100's should be fine. My buddy has a 60 size with hitec digitals all around and I think hes using the 1100...

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

I guess it ultimatley comes down to how many flights between a recharge versus weight of battery. I would imagine the 1100 would be fine, but you will obviously get a couple more flights without a recharge if you use the 1500.

RC Havoc 01-23-2004 04:15 PM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Good point pigman, but a 1500 will probably let you fly from dawn till dusk, even if you land only to refuel. Okay, maybe not that long.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

i went kind of crazy and used redundant packs, a 1650 6 volt and a 720 6 volt pack, so i could probably fly all day long if i wanted to. I'm also using coreless high torque/speed futaba servos though. Overkill i know. im still shooting for 5.5-5.75 lbs with a saito 91...not too shabby if you ask me.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Hi All
In the process of building up my UCD .46.

Got a couple of choice for engine but i would like actual feedback from other who have used the engines.

First one is an a new OS 50 SX
Second is used OS 70 Surpass 1
Third is a almost new OS 90 Surpass 1

On the four stroke side of things, has anyone used a flexi pipe and taken the exhuast out the air duct behind the cowl?

Cheers
Squid

Squid, Im using the 61FX, and just to let you know, I still had to add a little nose weight...

Hi
I have a couple of two stroke 60's but have not put to much thought in that direction, how does it fly with the OS 61 FX on.

I have a
OS 61 SF
SC 61
Picco 60
Rossi 60 FISE (dont think there is too much place for the pipe though)
Webra 60 RE, think these would quite well with the air duct and a tuned pipe

Cheers
Squid

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Squid, it seems to fly pretty good. Im using a 12X6 Zinger, but Im planning on changing to a 13X4 or a 14X4. I have plenty of clearence for the 14 in prop, but I dont want to go over 4 on the pitch. It has unlimited vertical with the 12X6, but the speed it to great. I would have like to put the new O.S. 70 Surpass II on it, but I already had the .61FX. Im not to sure about using a 60 4 stroke on it, but s Saito .80 would be nice...

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

I fly my UCD 46 with an OS .70 Surpass I & use APC 14 x 4 prop, TruTurn spinner. Works great for me - hovers and pull out is adequate plus wing loading is great - flies slow high-alpha and tailwheel first landings. I mounted it inverted, no regulator or pump & used Dubro fueler (no problem with leaks). The OS does flood while static if throttle is left anywhere but closed. I use a plugged Dubro probe I stick in the fueler between flights.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

I just received my kit and noticed with the small vertical tail sitting in the slot that it leans alot towards the right , is this intentional and has anybody else seen this in their UCD 46? Also what kind of cg can I expect with a YS 63 and hitec 225mg's in the back? Has anybody used the stock fuel tank with the pumped YS, and if not what tank would fit? Thank you for your responses.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

I am at 5000 ft and the YS 63 pulls my plane great.Around 1/2 throttle for hover.I used the stock fuel tank and so far no problems-30 runs or so.The vertical stab should be 90 degrees to the horizontal stab-if not lightly sand the slot till right. As far as servos in the tail I used HiTec 925mg all the way around. The plane CGs at 5 1/2" with a 1650 Nimh battary under the fuel tank. Also used a True Turn 2 1/4 inch spinner with the wide blade cut.Running a APC 13x4 wide blade.Great prop for the 63 runs at 11300 rpm at this elevation on 20 20 fuel. Also I would upgrade to 4-40 hardware to get rid of pushrod flex.Otherwise enjoy it is a great plane.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

edgeman55 is right about the hardware. I installed the stock harware first and changed it out before I flew it. I used the Dave Brown CF pushrods just to be safe. Im sure I would have put it in with the stock hardware by now...

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Thanks for the tips. I am going to use the MK hardware with the ball bearing clevises and cf tubes. It is the 4-40 size and should do the trick. I am planning on using the Hitec aluminum control arms and was wondering how long they need to be to get good 3D throw? Also a question for the Edgeman about the prop you used with your YS 63. I have a 14x4 I was planning on using. Do you think it is too much prop at 4400' MSL. I was afraid that the 13x4 would over rev the engine with the 30 percent fuel I use. A 2 inch spinner with the 120 slot seems impossible to find. How does yours look with the 2.5 inch spinner? Probably wouldn't be a good idea to use a nylon spinner and hack it out for the 14x4 prop on a YS 63. Boy the ailerons dont look like they will stay together. I know I will have to keep it slow. Haven't heard of any failures recently. Any comments on the strength and what kind of 3D stuff are you guys doing? Thanks again
