Recently bought a Sig Somethin extra. Read several places where the instructions are very good and the arf is easy to build. Probably because it is my first time to put an arf together, but I find the instructions lacking in many details in my opinion. Had trouble getting the fuel tank in, parts missing, etc. Oh well,
I am at the point of trying to mount an os46fx engine. From the pics in the manual, I can't tell if I have them right side up or not. Which way are they installed?
>If this is a nylon type mount the flat side of the arm goes toward the
>mounting lugs on the engine.
>
>99% of the time, the engine itself is ONLY GOING
>TO BE MOUNTED IN ONE OF THE FOLLOWING WAYS:
>
>Upright...Cylinder head pointing straight up
>
>Inverted....Cylinder head pointing straight down. If mounting
>inverted I STRONGLY suggest a remote glow ignitor. (It saves
>fingers and hands)
>
>Sideways... Cylinder head pointing towards the RIGHT side
>of the plane when looking from the rear of the plane
>forward.
>
>From the plans and/or pictures you should be able to determine
>which way to mount it. (upright, inverted, sideways)
Also, I can't find in the instructions how deep or how far out on the arms it should be mounted.
>The engine should be positioned on the motor mount so that
>the rear of the BACKING PLATE ON THE SPINNER is 1/8" to
>1.4" from the front of the cowl.
I know I ain't the brightest, but the manual needs help. Could anyone politely give me some help about placement of the engine? What about the thrust angle?
>The thrust angle SHOULD be built into the firewall.
I don't see any of this in the book. Thanks
You also need to be sure that the fuel outlet line on the fuel tank is within 3/8" of the height of the SPRAYBAR IN THE CARB. If the tank is too low, you are going to dead stick because the engine will be unable to pull the fuel from a less than 1/2 full tank. If the tank is to high you are going to have problems with the fuel siphoning out of the tank through the carb AND idle adjustment problems.
From your questions I have the impression you have never flown an RC plane before. If this is the case, I strongly urge you to get an instructor AND a TRAINER TYPE PLANE. The Something Extra is a 2nd (maybe) or 3rd plane. It is not a plane to try to learn to fly on.
Trying to teach yourself to fly has an extremely steep learning curve. The initial flight is typically less than 30 seconds and normally results in damage to the plane and/or the equipment onboard.
Simulators can be a help, but THEY CAN NOT TEACH YOU HOW TO FLY. There are too many variables between the sim and the real world. A prime example is that the plane in a sim is ALWAYS perfectly balanced.
Hope this helps.
