Default somethin extra engine mounting

Recently bought a Sig Somethin extra. Read several places where the instructions are very good and the arf is easy to build. Probably because it is my first time to put an arf together, but I find the instructions lacking in many details in my opinion. Had trouble getting the fuel tank in, parts missing, etc. Oh well, I am at the point of trying to mount an os46fx engine. From the pics in the manual, I can't tell if I have them right side up or not. Which way are they installed? Also, I can't find in the instructions how deep or how far out on the arms it should be mounted. I know I ain't the brightest, but the manual needs help. Could anyone politely give me some help about placement of the engine? What about the thrust angle? I don't see any of this in the book. Thanks

Also, I can't find in the instructions how deep or how far out on the arms it should be mounted.

I don't see any of this in the book. Thanks
You also need to be sure that the fuel outlet line on the fuel tank is within 3/8" of the height of the SPRAYBAR IN THE CARB. If the tank is too low, you are going to dead stick because the engine will be unable to pull the fuel from a less than 1/2 full tank. If the tank is to high you are going to have problems with the fuel siphoning out of the tank through the carb AND idle adjustment problems.

From your questions I have the impression you have never flown an RC plane before. If this is the case, I strongly urge you to get an instructor AND a TRAINER TYPE PLANE. The Something Extra is a 2nd (maybe) or 3rd plane. It is not a plane to try to learn to fly on.

Trying to teach yourself to fly has an extremely steep learning curve. The initial flight is typically less than 30 seconds and normally results in damage to the plane and/or the equipment onboard.

Simulators can be a help, but THEY CAN NOT TEACH YOU HOW TO FLY. There are too many variables between the sim and the real world. A prime example is that the plane in a sim is ALWAYS perfectly balanced.

Hope this helps.

Not a complete beginner. I have had limited success in flying a Nexstar. I am putting the somethin extra together for a time after I can consistently fly the nexstar. Where on the mounting arms do I locate the engine? What distance from the firewall?

Both sides of the arms are flat. If I install them one way, there is a 45 degree bracing built into the arm. Does this bracing stay on the top side of the mount, or the underside?

You want to mount the engine on the motor mounts so that the backplate of the spinner will be 1/8"-1/4" away from the front edge of the fuselage.

Hope this helps

just won this kit last night at my club meeting so I checked the plans the kit version has webing on both sides of its motor mount. when I have mounted my motors the webbing has been on the bottom it seems to work fine . I also have a NEXTAR and have used the iso smooth mount on several of my OS .46 planes ( I have 3 ) purchased extras from tower hobbies for 4 bucks . like Ken said 1/4" should be enough clearance check your pic. on the box . the kit version has great instructions and plans, might want to check with SIG they might be of some help I am going to throw mine together in the next few weeks

This is a great plane but it is hard to get the tank in center with the carb spray bar. The only way I found was to cut one of the cheek pieces of and mount the engine sideways. It will run mounted upright though but not as well. Any old modler will tell you to make sure the tank is centered with the tank. Yes there are some people that will tell you it doesn't matter but that is not true.

The distance from the firewall all depends on the Center of Balance. If it is nose heavy mount it as close as possible, if it is tail heavy mount it as far away from the firewall as possible. This will help balance the plane. This is a great second plane but make sure you can fly a trainer well first. The SE can be very fast with the 46 or larger engine.
