It's because the adhesive used in the making of epp foam will deteriorate after time and continual flexing. I'd use a lightweight, flexible glue, and only just enough where you start to notice crumbling. In my experience a little hot glue spread and melted into the foam can do a world of good, this is talking from experience with this foam in other applications, as my yak hasn't shown any signs of age yet.
