I started with a NexStar. I liked the plane, crashed it, bought an ARF, had that flying again in a few days. As for the AFS, I never used it. I unplugged it when it was new. When I moved the gear over to the ARF, I was delighted NOT to include the AFS. As others have said, it's useless--so I've been told at the club and hobby shops.

When first getting started in this hobby, I think it's a smart move to start with a simulator.
Don't get me wrong about the AFS system on the Nexstar. when you follow the instruction that came with the manual it works 100%. however most of the time the light , weather and time of the day is depended on to work, if you are far away from any club and had no way of getting an instructor! this thing could save your plane when no one else is there to help you to save it, I have tried it after I got my wings and you can make lot of mistakes and let go of the controls till the plane corrects itself, however you have to take over the control right after it corrects itself. I too started with the Nexstar. great starter plane and have three other trainer models, but the first one (Nexstar is the best) MHOP.
