RE: beginner choice questions
Take this advice from a retired Senior Chief. Find a local club and go out to their field and check it out. If you like what you see, join the club and use the club's trainer to learn on (part of the bennys of joining a club). Once you have learned to solo then consider buying an airplane. The P-51 trainer is a good choice. I think it is made by Hangar 9 and can be modified to fly just about any way you want to, from trainer to sport/warbird. Also find the various hobby shops locally and go talk to them. They are usually helpful and may give discounts to club members.
Forget about the helicopter until you have some flight time under your belt. They are difficult to fly and require flight experience if you want it to last.
OK, that is about the best advice I can give you. Good luck and check back here once in a while and let us know how you are doing.
