I believe you about the filter being close to the engine, but would you elaborate a little bout that.
Well what happens is the fuel filter gets super hot sitting on the engine like that. It can boil (maybe i dont know) and put bubble in the fuel line, bubble are air and will make you have problem just like if you had an air leak, thus running lean.
