Both LHSs in my area have Cox 049s in stock.
I just checked the Cox site. Apparently they are still selling engines but the only two listed are the Sure Start@$6.99 and the
[email protected]. The Babe Bee is a "new style" that appears to be a Sure Start front end with a plastic tank and backplate.
The Sure Start is a heck of a deal @ $6.99...a replacement glow plug is $8.99! BTW, I think they only have the standard glow plug now, not the high compression with squish band that was used in the TD.
If you like Cox engines and your dealer has some, I would suggest buying them up. They may be old stock and not replaceable.
Apparently, their site dropped engines as parts were sold out. The BW, then .010 and Texaco, and finally the PeeWee and TD .049 and .09. There were various combinations toward the last, such as BW with plastic backplate, BW with BabeBee type plastic backplate and Texaco type tank. Texaco with plastic tank. Dropped Texaco and BW to replace it with the new Babe Bee.
If the rumors are correct and the company has been sold, perhaps they will make a comeback...or perhaps they are where they want to be. They offer both a tanked and a tankless engine that will fly most currently available simple 1/2A planes.
Although I like the TeeDee series, they have been outclassed by more modern designs that have a muffler and do not need the ball-socket reset.
These are mostly observations and may not be entirely accurate.
