RE: Chip Hyde's Cap-X - Building & Flying
Hi all,
This has been a great thread, so I thought you may like to hear about the details of my CAP-X.
I've strapped a Zenoah G45 (turning a 20x10 carbon prop) to the front of mine (not the lightest lump, I know!) with an AUW ex fuel of 15lb
In terms of flyability, it is superb - plenty of vertical pull and great handling. I was concerned about tip-stall on landing, so checking the tip-stall up in the air (around 3 mistakes high!) it will do it, but only at v.slow airspeed and a good deal of up elevator.
To strap the Zenoah on, I did need to make a small firewall mod (cut a small chunk out and then reinforced behind, plus I have also filleted and glassed areas of the firewall and box for strength, as the zenoah is a bit heavy).
I have fitted a carb-bend and intake trumpet to the G45, which had a number of benefits for me - first, the carb bend puts enables a throttle linkage in a sensible, straightforward way. Second, the carb-bend puts enables the trumpet to be almost in parallel to the firewall sides, and thirdly, it stops the atomised charge being sucked out of the carb when flying (ie more power and more efficient)
To get the C of G right, I have fitted my powerpacks (2x 7.4v 2220mAh lipo) back in the fuselage. These connect in to an EMCOTEC DPSI BIC (I guess many of you know about these, but for those that don't (and I didn't) it is basically a dual input (from batteries) dual output (to rx) lipo compatible regulator for 5.5v output, plus other functions for telling you how much current you've drawn, peak current etc).
Other than that, it has some chunky Hitec servos, Futaba PCM rx, and that is about it...!
Hope somebody finds this useful.
Rgds
