Check your LHS or a modeling buddy and look at one of Harry Higley books (not sure, but it is "probably" in either 'There are no Secrets' or 'Master Modeling"). He has a complete step-by-step article with pictures on splitting a cowl for a two cylinder engine.

As I remember, the finished product was, as are all with Harry, outstanding.
