They could make a special class where retracts and tuned pipes are allowed for the guys that want to spent a bit more and have a "real" pattern ship.
Think about this. For those who started pattern from the begining, then the "glory days" were when the USA team would always win. That is before retracts and tuned pipes. So for them a real pattern airplane does not have retracts and pipes.
