Not sure about that...
Is there a "notch" or recess in the backplate for piston skirt clearance when the piston is at bottom dead center?
The engines I have dealt with, that curved bottom of the piston skirt is usually for backplate clearance.


Edit: Taking another look...it could be for counter-weight clearance?
