What was Clarence Lee's concern? Power loss?

Power loss and parts loss. Many glow engines shed screws, nuts and bolts when soft mounted.

If you are flying contemporary pattern, you have no choice. You must use a soft mount to meet the sound requirements. However, flying older pattern ships in SPA and similar events does not require the extra weight and constantly changing thrust angles that a soft mount imparts. I avoid soft mounts like the plague.
