Default Motor Mount

I was able to find a NIB ST Bluehead, one slightly used Bluehead and a NIB G60. I intend to use the Bluehead in my Southern R/C Tigertail. I'm rounding up the hardware before construction begins and have the Southern R/C-Dave Brown retracts ready. However, I'm looking for a solid metal motor mount and it appears nobody makes them anymore. I can find composite mounts which I really would rather not use and I can find the soft mounts which I've never used and Clarence Lee shuns.

Question- Does anyone know of a solid metal motor mount available? ( The OS .61 mount comes predrilled and the holes don't match). and, 2. Will I see any performance issues with a soft mount?

Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Frank,

I used the old aluminum mounts in the 60s but when the Kraft mounts came out in the 70s I switched to them. They have worked out very well. Dave Brown Products makes a mount that has the same mounting holes as the Kraft mounts and I now use them.

I like the Dave Brown mouts, too. They are round and are easy to mount at any angle, especially on smaller firewalls.

I should add that I too was concerned about Lee’s recommendation about using very hard mounts but nowadays everyone flex mounts engines.

What was Clarence Lee's concern? Power loss?

Yes. He wanted them mounted solid for the power stroke.

You can get very nice aluminum mounts from JTEC.

Power loss and parts loss. Many glow engines shed screws, nuts and bolts when soft mounted.

If you are flying contemporary pattern, you have no choice. You must use a soft mount to meet the sound requirements. However, flying older pattern ships in SPA and similar events does not require the extra weight and constantly changing thrust angles that a soft mount imparts. I avoid soft mounts like the plague.
