RE: floyd bennett field (FBF) question
Back in the 1950's there was a site at the 1939 World's Fairground parking lot, (Roosevelt Ave, Queens?) that we used quite a bit.
Also, there used to be a site on the Interboro, across from midtown Manhattan, that was used a lot, later. I'd left by then...
Where I flew most was just south of Fort Hamilton VA Hospital, about 108th St, Bay Ridge. The Verrazano Bridge was just north of there. That was a sea wall space off the Belt Parkway about 200' wide between Ft Hamilton and Gravesend Bay. It had a parking area, too, tho we went mostly by bus and foot. Actually, the Verrazano Bridge was built after I joined the US Army...
Another place was Marine Park, north of Avenue U, where there wre several meadows and a few parking lots nicely suitable... Most likely long gone.
Getting old, I guess...
Back then we could use just about any paved ballfield, until someone complained. Then, on to the next one for a while. Instead of calling the cops, anybody bothered by our noise (no mufflers) woud just holler out his/her window and we'd move on...
First control-line I ever saw was either at the wreckage of old Luna Park, Coney Island, or at an armory show in uptown or the Bronx, in about 1948.
