Both NiMH and NiCad will discharge in storage. So if you discharge them or not, they will be discharged over long storage periods.
I would recommend that you put them in a zip lock bag and put them in the vegetable crisper in your refrigerator.

i have heard that if you wish to store batteries for a long period of time to charge fully first. i also hear to dis-charge fully. which is correct?
