Depends on what kind of battery and how long.... Ions will store best at 1/2 - 3/4 capacity, Lipos are similar, and NiMH and NiCD....I just don't bother with those. They are cheap enough to replace if they begin to fail.

BUT...why store them at all? Go fly em and keep using them all year. Put some skis on your plane.

Both NiMH and NiCad will discharge in storage. So if you discharge them or not, they will be discharged over long storage periods.
I would recommend that you put them in a zip lock bag and put them in the vegetable crisper in your refrigerator.

some nicads set ups ARE NOT cheap. if storing for a long time , (many months ) its best to discharge them.
