I'm using -6 in low rate (expo)switch 'on' - and -3 in high expo (switch off) - but no dual rate, as it cuts the overall throws, and I only want to soften them up.

The advantage of Expo (my opinion) is the center feels softer, but if you need full throw, it's there for you - with dual rates it won't be.
